Huge Loch Pike Caught
Massive Scottish predator falls to angler on second trip to venue.
One of the biggest pike to be caught north of the border this season has been landed at a huge weight of 36lb 3oz.Banked in the first few days of the year, the big predator was caught by specimen angler David McGuire from the Isle-of-Bute’s Loch Fad trout fishery in Scotland.
The fish, caught by David on only his second ever visit to the venue, fell for a legered dead bait set-up presenting a popped-up bluey after the 30-year-old angler missed out on the swim he wanted the fish.
“When I got to the Loch I had already chosen my swim in my head, but it had already been taken,” David told Total Coarse Fishing. “Luckily me and my fishing partner made the choice to fish the far side of the Loch after that, a decision that ended up with me catching the fish of the lifetime.”
A frustrating start to the session saw Davie suffer from a number of dropped runs on his rods. But when the big fish came along there was no such problem.
“My indicator dropped back slightly before moving slowly upwards as the fish swam off with the bait,” continued Davie, a sales assistant at Glasgow Angling Centre. “I held the braid mainline to feel the fish and then struck into what felt like a sizeable pike.
“She made several very strong runs and when I saw her in the water I thought she would be around 20lb,” he continued. “I had a bit of trouble with here closer in because I was fishing close to a wooden jetty which see kept going for. Luckily my pal Paul Doyle had his waders on and managed to net her out in the water, and especially so as on the unhooking mat the trebles just dropped out meaning I might have lost her if I’d played her to the bank.”
On the scales the fish went past the 36lb mark, smashing to pieces Davy’s previous pike pb of 18lb 9oz.
“It was such an amazing fish to catch and I’m still over the moon,” continued David. “The first time I fished Loch Fad I was lucky enough to net a 33lb pike for my mate Paul, I never thought the next visit he’d be doing the same for me with an even bigger fish!”
David beat his prize using a Grey’s Prowla 3.5lb TC rod with 40 Power Pro braided mainline to a 30lb Fox Carboflex trace and size 4 semi barbless trebles.
Surprisingly Davy’s fish is not the biggest pike to have ever been caught from Loch Fad. In 2005 a fish of 42lb 8oz was landed, and with a number of new 30lb fish having already been reported by anglers this season, the fishery manager, Jimmy Poole, thinks there could be even better to come.
“I’m sure we could be looking at a new Scottish pike record in the next few years if the fish keep growing like they have been,” he told Total Coarse Fishing. “30s are coming out regularly now, and they’re all in good condition. The fish David caught has plenty of growing left to do so it’s very exciting.”
