Cod catch was worth the wait at Tyne estuary UK Fishing News

JOHN Armitage must have thought his luck was out after watching friend Stephen Brown take five cod when fishing from the Tyne estuary.

Just on packing-up time, Armitage finally had a bite and picking his rod up he was almost pulled over.

Armitage eventually got the fish to the side, where Brown was able to grab it.

They had the fish weighed, which proved to be the biggest this winter from the shore at 19lb.

Brown's five cod also weighed 19lb, the best 6lb 8oz and 6lb - and 19lb seems to be the going rate.

Gary Wilson landed four cod for 19lb from Blyth, Ronnie Forest five cod for 19lb from Hadston, the best 6lb 4oz.

Al Thain had a cracking catch at Newton, taking a personal best cod of 10lb 1oz, another of 9lb 2oz and one of 6lb 10oz.

The good cod catches I predicted for the Amble Open did not materialise, most anglers after a few hours on the rocks going to the beaches for flounder.

By this time they were a few fish behind Matthew Holdroyd, who read the conditions perfectly and went to Warkworth from the off, coming out on top of the 588 competitors and winning the event for the second time in three years, with 14 plump floundesr for 14lb 5.5oz.

Of the cod taken, Anthony Gibbison caught two for 13lb 10.25oz from Boulmer, which included the second heaviest at 7lb 4oz 4drams.

Willy Emery claimed the heaviest of 7lb 5oz 12drams in his third-placed bag of 10lb 1oz 12drams taken from Bog Hall.

Spotter Pounder had incredible sport with whiting off Hartlepool Pilot pier.

His first session gave him 12, his second 44, his third an incredible 78.

Dave Mcenaney took seven whiting and a flounder from Corky's corner, being out fished by his son Craig who took fourteen.

Although scarce, there have been a few codling.

Paul Hossack celebrated a personal best of 7lb 11oz in a 20ln bag from Roker pier.

Chris Pearson caught one of 7lb 2oz from Sandy Bay, Brian Scott a personal best of 6lb 3oz from Craster and Andy Morrow fish of 6.5lb and 4lb from Hawthorn Hive, which gave Gary Pye the winning fish of 5.45lb in Seaham's Badger Open.

Whiting have made up the bulk of match catches.

Steve Gordon won Cleadon’s match with 19 for 14lb 9oz and South Shields match with 27 fish, mostly whiting, for 19lb 7oz, from South Shields pier.
