The Alabama Rig has created a frenzy in the tackle industry that Billy Moore hasn't seen in 20 years.

“It's amazing,” said Moore, the manager of Lucky Lure Tackle in Oklahoma City. “This bait is as big as the Sluggo was. You can't believe how many people are going to Arbuckle and catching fish on it.”

When pro angler Paul Elias won an FLW bass tournament in October by catching more than 100 pounds of fish on the Alabama Rig, it became the bait that everyone wanted.

Since then, other manufacturers have raced to get their own version of the Alabama Rig on store shelves. Bass fishermen across the country are making homemade versions of it in their garages.

“Since the first of the year there have been multiple manufacturers come out with a version of the rig,” said David Hughes, owner of Lucky Lure Tackle. “Everyone has got one. We are selling them as fast as we can get them in.”

Before all of the copycats started appearing, anglers with original Alabama rigs were selling them for as much as $100 on eBay.

The Alabama Rig is very similar to a small umbrella rig. Umbrella rigs have been used for years by Lake Texoma fishermen when trolling for striped bass.

An Alabama man took the design of the umbrella rig and scaled it down so it could be cast.

The Alabama Rigs are smaller and lighter and look like a baby's mobile that hangs above a crib. The rigs have a weighted head with five wire leaders attached for five baits.
