p = previous day; f = following day.

Where a rise time is noted with a 'p', it means that the time listed is for the previous day. Where a set time is noted with an 'f', it means that the time listed is for the following day. This complication is because the Moon rises, transits and sets almost an hour later every night, so every few days there is a 24-hour 'calendar day' in which the Moon either doesn't rise, or doesn't set.

These times will be adequate for general purpose use in the Perth metropolitan area. However, corrections must be applied for other locations in Western Australia.

GENERAL FISHING:

With Australia Day just around the corner, it means that the kids will be heading back to school shortly. Those of us in a position to fish when and where we like can then take full advantage of no noisy juveniles destroying the peace and serenity of an early morning on the beach.

Several anglers have commented to me on the bait shortage and water temperatures. One of my regular contacts was fishing about 8km south west of Mindarie last weekend and landed a mahi mahi. They spotted the fish while bottom bouncing in 30m of water chasing some small whiting for bottom bait. One had a surface rig set up and cast a baited hook out towards the fish which swam directly up to it and took it without hesitation. Fresh mahi mahi steaks are in my opinion the best eating fish in the ocean.

Members of a local angling club had their January field day last weekend and fished locally. Boundaries were Mindarie to Yanchep and not too many members troubled the weigh master. One bag that stood out from the rest was comprised of several good tailor and a couple of other species including herring and whiting. Lack of breeze to stir up the water and high water temperatures have possibly contributed to the lack of fish.

Good anglers limit their catch, rather than catch their limit.

WHAT HAS BEEN HAPPENING AT POPULAR FISHING LOCATIONS?

MANDURAH

One family activity usually associated with Australia Day is catching a feed of crabs at Mandurah. They are still spread throughout the estuary and dabbers and netters are doing well. Sizes and numbers are improving and crabbers are advised to keep a check on the size of their catch. Tailor size and numbers in and around the Mandurah area are continuing to improve.

Along the southern beaches most catches have been made after the sea breeze comes in of an afternoon. Mulloway and small sharks have also been taken from these beaches and are generally being taken after dark. Included in most anglers bags have been some good tailor, several small salmon, flathead, herring and sweep. Several of the salmon caught were either just legal size or just undersize, and this indicates that they are possibly juveniles from last year’s spawning run. If so it means that we may be in for a good salmon season in the metro area later in the year. If water temperatures permit, hopefully this will be the case and we can look forward to continuing good fishing throughout the metropolitan area.

Some of the mulloway have been up around the 10kg mark. Anglers fishing in the estuary report that tailor are wide spread and are mixed with a few salmon and skippy. The Dawesville Cut is still producing some good fishing for herring, whiting and King George whiting along with an occasional skippy and tarwhine.

On the beaches to the north of Mandurah there are still a lot of small sharks being taken after dark. Most anglers are taking mixed bags of herring, whiting and tailor. Small mulloway are being taken from the beaches at Golden Bay and Secret Harbour. Mulloway up to 15kg have been caught from the beaches at Singleton and Madora.

Bream are still active in the rivers with an occasional larger fish keeping anglers interested.

SECRET HARBOUR / PORT KENNEDY / ROCKINGHAM / SAFETY BAY

Long Point, Kwinana and Warnbro beaches have all continued to produce a few good tailor during the last week. There have been some yellow-fin whiting as well, along with herring and a few garfish and skippy. The jetties are turning on herring early in the morning, along with squid and blue mackerel. Penguin Island sandbar is still a good spot to fish for flathead along the drop off into deeper water. The beaches around this region continue to produce good fishing for whiting and tailor. Better times to fish are either very early morning or later afternoon through to dark. Several anglers report small mulloway and sharks from the beaches.

COCKBURN SOUND:

The waters in the lower end of the Sound continue to produce some King George whiting, herring and skippy. There are still a lot of big squid available along with a few tarwhine and garfish. Sulphur Bay on Garden Island and Mangles Bay continue to provide boat anglers with a feed of squid. Most successful anglers are using the new versions of squid jigs, however mulies rigged on wire jigs work almost as well.

KWINANA / WOODMAN POINT:

Tailor, herring and blue mackerel are being caught from Coogee beaches and the Ammunition Jetty is consistently producing good fishing, with a variety of species being caught. Bags have included tailor, herring, skippy, whiting and blue mackerel. After dark there are a few smaller school sharks around along with a few stingrays and an occasional mulloway.

FREMANTLE

Reports indicate that there are plenty of smaller tailor about after dark. The South Mole is the place to be for a feed of tailor. Reports indicate plenty of fish, and plenty of anglers. Catches around this area have also included a variety of smaller sharks and some good squid. A few bonito have been taken and are giving herring fishermen a heart attack when a whitebait or sardine meant for herring is taken. Other anglers report that there are plenty of bait fish in the harbour and anglers fishing the wharves are taking a variety of species. Smaller mulloway have featured in the catches during the last week.

ROTTNEST

Yellowtail kingfish continue to provide a good deal of action for both boat anglers and shore based anglers at the West End. Spanish mackerel and shark mackerel should start to be taken more regularly over the next few weeks, particularly by anglers trolling lures as they move between spots.

Boaties venturing out to the Rottnest Trench are reporting a few mahi mahi.

There are still plenty of herring and some good skippy in the reef holes around the island and shore based anglers are catching some good fish. Accurate casting into the holes is required. The best rig is a small ball sinker. Other anglers report some good lure fishing around various reefs around the island with some very good tailor being taken.

PORT BEACH / LEIGHTON / COTTESLOE / SWANBOURNE

Whiting, herring, garfish and flathead have been caught regularly along these beaches. Anglers putting in some work are being rewarded with some good mixed bags. Swanbourne near the drain has been producing tailor and an odd mulloway. One angler also reported catching a 10kg mulloway last week. Read the beach and look for gutters and formations that will hold bait and smaller fish and you are more than likely to find a mulloway after dark.

Anglers fishing from the beach and rocks about a kilometre south of the groyne have caught several tailor in excess of 2kg during the past few weeks. Most of these fish have been taken after dark. Most of these fish have been released after being taken on shallow running lures or surface poppers.

CITY BEACH / FLOREAT / SCARBOROUGH / TRIGG ISLAND

After dark tailor activity has picked up along this stretch and there have been several good fish taken throughout the area. During the day there are still a few herring, skippy and whiting. Various species of small sharks are also still being taken from most beaches after dark. They provide a little excitement at the time of capture and don’t taste too bad if prepared properly. If you’re not going to eat any fish caught please ensure that you release them quickly and carefully. Early morning anglers also report some good tailor and herring and whiting.

HILLARYS / OCEAN REEF / MINDARIE

Some good tailor have been taken from the rock walls by anglers fishing into the sea breeze from the south west corners of these structures at Hillarys, Ocean Reef and Mindarie. Beaches adjacent to the marinas have been very productive late in the evening. During the day there have been herring, the odd skippy and whiting taken from the rock walls. Early morning has been producing some good yellow-finned whiting and an occasional tarwhine from the beaches and groynes just south of the marina. Burns Beach has been quietly producing some good fishing with some very good tailor being taken early in the morning just after sunrise.

YANCHEP / TWO ROCKS / MOORE RIVER

Anglers fishing areas to the north of the Lagoon are still taking some larger tailor, but numbers are down. An occasional mulloway has made life a bit more interesting. Further north, tailor and small mulloway are the main catches from the rocks and beaches in this area. Small sharks are causing a few problems for anglers with a few fish biting through rigs. The answer is to use heavier mono (up to 30 kg) rather than wire for leaders. Anglers fishing the area around the mouth of the Moore River at Guilderton continue to catch some very good tailor. One fish landed a little further up at the Three Mile reef last Saturday evening was estimated to be between 80 and 85cm, which puts it up around the 5kg mark. Not a bad fish for the metropolitan area. Best times to fish are from late afternoon through to full dark or very early morning before sun up. After sun up herring and whiting come on the bite for a few hours and after dark there have been several mulloway taken.

BOAT FISHING:

Anglers fishing out from Mandurah report that there are plenty of King George whiting and skippy on the Five Fathom Bank and a few snapper and Westralian Jewfish being caught in the deeper water of broken bottom and reef areas

In the northern metropolitan area anglers fishing inside of the Three Mile reef system have been taking a few very good skippy, big bull herring and large yellow-finned whiting. Small snapper have been mixed in with the skippy and at times they become a nuisance stealing baits. It is a good sign for the next few seasons as these fish grow up and put on some weight. It is a similar story in the southern suburbs with some good fish coming out of Cockburn Sound and along the Five Fathom Bank. This reef structure is very under-rated as it continues to regularly produce good fishing. During this last week it has returned good snapper, small Westralian Jewfish, some squid and several blue swimmer crabs. Tailor, skippy and herring are widespread with some King George whiting being caught adjacent to weed beds.

There are reports of Spanish mackerel being taken along the outer edge of the Bank. Deep water anglers fishing along the inside of Direction Bank have been taking snapper to 10 kg and Westralian Jewfish up to 18 kg. Other species taken have included skippy to 2 kg, and King George whiting. It is a similar story south of the river with off shore anglers fishing Duffield Ridge on the southern side of Rottnest taking good King George whiting, break-sea cod and snapper.

SWAN AND CANNING RIVERS

Tailor activity has picked up with several good fish being taken from the lower reaches and jetties. In Mosman and Freshwater Bay, boat anglers have been getting a few mulloway with most fish in the 12 – 15 kg range. Around the Narrows, mulloway are being caught on a regular basis. Most anglers are averaging one fish for every three or four runs. Fish have averaged out at between 12 – 15 kg.

There are still a few samsonfish in the lower reaches of the river along with some good flathead. The tide changes in the early morning will provide anglers chasing flathead and flounder a chance to exploit areas not normally available to wading anglers. Both soft plastic and hard bodied lures have been used to take some good fish. Whiting are still being taken from the shallows in the lower reaches but blowies are a cause for concern. Best time to fish for the whiting is after dark as the blowies like an early night and pack up and sleep after dark.

Reports from bream anglers indicate that there still a few black bream around with most fish coming from sections of the river upstream of The Narrows. Kayakers are taking good fish by working along the reed beds and under the overhanging trees, where the water is probably a little cooler.
