Bathurst police warn of ice fishing thefts -

Bathurst police are warning anyone looking to enjoy some ice fishing to lock up their valuables after a series of thefts.

The Bathurst police have had reports of several thefts from on-ice fishing huts and vehicles parked near the ice in the area.

Bathurst Police Const. Jeff Gauthier said people should take steps to make sure they do not become victims.

“People can make sure that their buildings are secure, that their vehicles are secure [and] make sure that things that may be attractive to thieves are not in plain view,” Gauthier said.

Marc Doiron is one of the victims of these ice-fishing thefts.

While he was installing a stove in his on-ice shack on Wednesday night, Doiron said someone broke into his truck and stole his heavy winter coat and a couple of saws.

“One of the guys that was there, he told me that they stole some books and a hotpot from his car the other day,” he said.

The Bathurst police have also had a report of fishing equipment being stolen from an on-ice hut.
