Great Scott pegs back rivals at Robin Wood

WHAT do you get if you get a top class angler on one of the best pegs on the fishery?

The cold and wet conditions at Thornton have seen few anglers fishing at the reservoirYou get Tony Scott winning the match, not by much, but he managed to win a very tight match where all of the top weights were surprisingly carp.

Last week at the Curborough Fishery hardly any carp were caught at all, but this week at the ROBIN WOOD FISHERY, that is virtually all that was caught.

Nine carp gave Scott his first win on this venue as, fishing the pole, he went over the obstructions and presented red maggots for an excellent winter weight of 18lbs 15ozs.

He may have been an England competitor, but even he has to admit that he has struggled to come to terms with this type of fishing.

However, he is getting there — and that is not good news for his competitors.

Jeff Eardley pushed him hard with 17lbs 11ozs, five carp making up that weight.

He went against convention and fished sweet corn on a straight lead for his fish — one more fish and it could have been a different story.

Third placed Dave Sherratt had one of the only mixed bag of fish in the match.

Fishing the pole and red maggots he caught carp, crucians and ide for 15lbs 15ozs.

The word ‘wimp’ was being brandished around when John Adams’ name was mentioned as he currently only ventures out when the weather is warm enough.

He fished well enough though, as he put 13lbs 9ozs onto the scales, all carp caught on the pole and red maggots.

There was an excellent turnout, but it has to be said that almost half of the field went home fishless.

Having said that, it is winter and every bite has to produce a fish.

The STOPPOS FISHERY has continued to fish well thanks to how deep it is.

Feeder fished fairly close in always seems to produce the fish and that was the case for Tim Kinson — the only debate is what bait to use on the hook.

Kinson fished his feeder with casters and worm and caught carp and tench for 26lbs 4ozs, not a bad weight for the time of year.

John Stevens took second place with 20lbs 8ozs using a similar method, but adding several perch to the carp and tench already in his net.

Third place went to Pete Johnson with 17lbs 4ozs, an all carp catch taken on the feeder.
