Fishing ban proposed for parts of the Cape - Cape Coral & Naples, Florida

CAPE CORAL -

Residents say trash, illegal parking and noise along the canals in the North Cape have been part of a growing problem for years. Now, some city leaders and residents agree that banning fishing altogether is the best option.

North Cape Coral resident Nate Bliss paints a clear picture of the problems near his house.

"Noise, yelling and screaming. We've had fighting, pitching fish in the road, trash of unparallel amounts," he described.

Even Wednesday morning, you can see the remnants of parties that happened along the bridges on Old Burnt Store Road.

Bliss says the culprits are late-night fishermen.

"We've tried to work with the fishermen. Some are cooperative, pick up the trash and don't cause a problem. But we have some that just won't cooperate," he said.

So Bliss and other neighbors turned to the city. And after months of work, residents and some city leaders have agreed that the best solution is to ban fishing on the bridges along Old Burnt Store.

Cape Coral City Councilman Kevin McGrail says it has worked in other parts of the city.

"Along Sands Boulevard there were ‘no fishing' signs placed and it did cut down on the trespassing issue," he said.

Councilman McGrail says there are other areas in the neighborhood where fishing will continue to be OK and even welcomed.

He explained one such area is where the Ceitus boat lift used to be.

"As we post the ‘no fishing signs' we're going to try to get the fishermen to use the approved areas," McGrail said.

We spoke to two fishermen Wednesday who said the ban wouldn't bother them. And Bliss says he's just hoping the change will work.

"The ‘no fishing' sign is the key. It gives the police the authority to say you can't fish here - we think," he said.

Residents and city officials will meet over the issue later this month.

Councilman McGrail said he hopes to have the no fishing signs in place by late February
