I talked to a few anglers this week who have been fishing for speckled perch in the Winter Haven chain.
They all agreed the best lakes in the chain for these fish are Cannon, Winterset, Hartridge, Jessie, Howard and May.
Try your luck at night with a light attached to your boat, using minnows while drifting for great success. Anglers fishing off the docks at Lake Howard have been catching 10 or 12 nice specks on minnows.
Bass fishing has been up and down these past few days as the cold fronts moved through, but that did not stop some anglers who caught bass in the 2- to 8-pound class. Best bet for bass is 6-inch plastic worms in the Junebug color or live shiners. Most bass were caught out of Summit, Winterset, Eloise, Roy and Jessie. Anglers are still picking up a few bluegills on crickets.
Anglers fishing in Lake Blue located in Inwood have been catching some nice speckled perch while dunking minnows at night while drifting. Bill Richardson caught his limit on Monday night. Bass are also hitting good in this lake, no large ones but plenty in the 1- to 3-pound class being caught on plastic 6-inch worms in the moccasin color.
Other lakes which are producing good catches of speckled perch are Lakes Sears, Mcleod, Elbert, Buckeye, Kissimmee, Walk-In-Water and Hatchineha. Bass fishing has slowed just a bit, but should pick up in the weeks ahead. Try 6-inch plastic worms in Junebug or Moccasin colors as these both do well for me.
A great Christmas gift for that boater
