Karas pips rivals to match fishing victory after tight finish

HOLWELL Angling Club’s Sunday match on the reservoir finished in close order with only one fish difference between the winners, writes Bren Southgate.

Ian Karas won the day fishing the tip from peg five to take carp and skimmers for 21lb 12oz. Runner-up Jimmy Aley also fished the tip from peg 23 for 20lb 4oz. Mick West came third with skimmers and carp for 19lb 12oz from peg 15, and Pete Wade was fourth with a mixed bag of carp, roach and perch for 14lb 12oz from peg 24.

* On Sunday, Holwell anglers fish the reservoir again, draw at 8am.

* The British Pike Championship qualifier, due to be fished last Saturday at Celtic Lakes, Frisby, was cancelled because the main pit was covered with ice. The fixture will be re-arranged for a later date,

During the week, predator sport has been good. Colin Faversham came in pursuit of his first zander and took three pike, the best a fish of 20lb 4oz which took a herring deadbait. He also took a specimen zander of 9lb 7oz.

Andy Pollard, of Melton, landed three pike on fly, as did Will Harris who captured one of 16lb. Graham Jackson took six double-figure fish, the best at 18lb.

* At Lakeview Fishery, sport has slowed a little, but Shaun Butler again won the Sunday open with 58lb 8oz from the stream pool. Shaun Kemp drew the golden peg, but finished in second place with 38lb 8oz.

* Rutland Water hosted its popular annual fur and feather match on Sunday when the fish were plentiful and of a good size.

Geoff Allsop, from Melton, netted five fish for 18lb 9.25oz with rainbows up to 4lb 11oz to win the match.

Fisheries manager Jon Marshall was second after taking two fish for 10lb 8.75oz, including his personal best Rutland rainbow of 6lb 9.25oz, the best of the match. Third place went to Alan Taylor with four fish for 9lb 12oz.

The fish were taken from the Normanton Bank, Whitwell and the peninsula with boobies, tube flies and fry patterns working well.

* Grafham Water bank anglers are finding fish are feeding on shrimp around the margins.

The most productive areas gave been the dam, Gayne’s Cove, Seat, G Bank, Deep Water Point and Hill Farm. The best methods have been floating lines with shrimp patterns, diawl bachs, crunchers and minkies fished very close to the bank.
