Preparing for pike National - Angling - Fenland Citizen

Published on Wednesday 31 October 2012 07:24

It is going to be a very busy weekend on our local fenland waters as pike anglers from around the country make their way to Whittlesey to fish the annual Angling Trust British Pike Championship.

The venue will take in most of the fen drains around Whittlesey including the Twenty Foot Drain Glassmoor Bank and perhaps even Cock Bank. So my advice to local anglers thinking of fishing these waters this weekend is to give them a miss.

The event takes place on Saturday, but on Friday and Sunday there will also be a lot of bank activity.

Over the past few years we have seen quite a few local rods making the frame and indeed winning.

Townsend Lakes

The Wednesday open matches have found the Kingfisher Pool in good form, fishery boss Colin Begbie topped the field with a level 75lb from peg 4 taken on the long pole with pellet and a few better samples late on in the match with luncheon meat. Ricky James second 72lb 8oz, Neil Pesky on 55lb 2oz.

Sunday’s open match on the prolific Cuckoo Pool was topped by Ben Jackson with a fine 141lb 2oz from peg 9. The long pole with pellet saw Ben taking small carp while maggot fished down the middle saw a good run of ide to see him well clear of the field. Harry Morgan 112lb 12oz, Steve Sharpe 112lb 8oz.
Tydd Gote AC

Black Dyke on the North Level System around Tydd Gote once again hit form for the Wednesday Open. Victorious with 10lb 1oz was Emneth tackle dealer Mick Asker, on pole with pinkie taking small roach and skimmers. John Taylor second 6lb 15oz, Ray Groom 5lb 6 ½ oz. The Wednesday matches draw at Black Dyke at 9am, Sunday draw is at Clough at 9am.

You can always tell winter is not far away when the likes of Decoy Lakes sees anglers struggling. That was the case for Fenland Rods on the Six Island Pool. Match winner Tim Bates found a few better samples late on with sweetcorn fished close in with a modest 61lb 10oz. Runner-up John Smith caught regularly but had a bad last hour with 60lb 8oz. Mac Campbell third 54lb 15oz, Matt Lutkin 49lb 14oz. This weekend is on the Snake Pool at Head Fen Fishery.

Spratt’s AC

Fields End Water at Doddington continues to fish reasonably well, in the latest match it was close at the top of the leader board with Trevor Cousins just taking the honours with 76lb 10oz fishing a pellet waggler from peg 1. Pushing him all the way to the final whistle was Martin Parker, he caught on a groundbait waggler and later on the pole for 76lb 8oz. In third place with 53lb 4oz was Mac Campbell.

Rose and Crown

Chatteris rod Kevin Bridgement is the man to beat right now, he topped the field in the club’s latest two matches. On the Magpie Pool at Pidley Kevin bagged 57lb 11oz, Bill Savage 45lb second, followed by Paul Killingworth 21lb 15oz.

At the weekend Kevin was out in front again, on the Cuckoo Canal Pool at Townsend lakes. Drawn on peg 5 he fished maggot close in to record 63lb 4oz. Runner-up Mick Woodham on 49lb 10oz, Dave Beeken 40lb 6oz.

Eastern Europeans and handling pike with care | Anglers Mail

WELCOME to the Wednesday blog – each week filled by Angler’s Mail magazine’s HQ, focussing on

happenings in the wonderful world of fishing, including latest tackle.

There will be something for everyone - pleasure fishing, carp fishing, match fishing, specialist fishing or anything else.

This week’s Angler’s Mail HQ blog is by production editor Richard Holroyd.

We hope you enjoy the blog, and share it with your friends on Facebook and Twitter by clicking the icons above, or by the “old skool” method of telling fellow anglers!

Feel free also to comment by using the special space at the bottom on this page.

A different member of the AM team blogs here every Wednesday.

BUILDING BRIDGES WITH EASTERN EUROPEANS

I recently visited a fishery and the only sign at the entrance was this one.

WE’VE all read about the negative reports on Eastern Europeans poaching fisheries due to either a lack of understanding or an unwillingness to respect UK angling laws, but there are measures in place to combat this illegal activity and also bring the cultural divide closer together.

The Angling Trust and the Environment Agency are looking at ways of integrating Eastern Europeans with their Building Bridges project. There are now more anti-theft posters and multi-language signs along our riverbanks and fisheries to highlight laws and discourage poaching.

Also one of Angling Trust’s 2011/2012 key strategies is to invite Eastern European communities to fish matches at various fisheries.

This is obviously an exercise to integrate and teach Eastern Europeans the way coarse fishing is partaken in the UK.

The Angling Trust and the EA have also set about employing Polish anglers to talk to Polish communities to explain fishing laws. Furthermore, the Scottish Federation for Course Angling recently announced the formation of the first Polish Angling Club in Scotland with the objective to highlight and encourage catch and release.

These seem to be good, positive steps to help build bridges so I was dismayed to see a sign at the entrance of a fishery I visited recently stating that Eastern Europeans are banned.

The owner has had problems in the past with Eastern Europeans – not with taking fish for the pot but leaving litter, starting bankside fires and not paying – but surely a ban is not the answer and it has left me wondering how many other fisheries have also gone down this route.

Dave Coster in My Say in the letters pages of this week’s Angler’s Mail has noticed that some landowners in Ireland have closed venues because they have had enough of all the bother that foreign anglers cause.

For fisheries to have a blanket ban on all Eastern Europeans is discriminatory and creates an us-and-them mentality, and may put off potential newcomers totally off fishing completely.

The closure of venues, and thereby punishing all anglers, doesn’t seem right either, so surely there is a way forward without taking such drastic measures.

This week’s cover star – Polish angler Kajetan Wyslane.

I recently spoke to a couple of Polish immigrants and when I asked them about what fishing in Poland means to Polish people they both concurred it is viewed as a social gathering where they cook what they catch on a bankside fire whilst drinking Vodka.

It is naïve to think that this view is taken by all Polish anglers, but it does conform to stereotype.

There are certainly some highly skilled Eastern European anglers – you only have to look at the results of international fishing competitions, such as the recent World Carp Fishing Championships, to see how well they perform at the highest level.

There are also a number of accomplished Eastern European anglers living in the UK, like this week’s Angler’s Mail cover star, Polish angler Kajetan Wyslane (left), who enjoy the sport and prefer to, no matter what country they fish in, return their catch.

In Poland and by some Polish residents in the UK, however, carp is eaten on Christmas Day, much in the same way as British traditionally eat turkey, and in Polish folklore brings good health and prosperity for the New Year.

In fact one of the Polish lads that I spoke to has a scale of the carp served to his family on Christmas Day in his wallet as he believes that, like many other Poles who keep a carp scale in their wallet or purse, it will bring him good luck and fortune.

For many British anglers the perception of coarse fish and fishing (in the main to catch, admire, care for and return fish) is in complete contrast to lots of Eastern Europeans who catch fish for consumption.

We have to believe that a growing awareness of our laws will be adhered to by an increasing number of first generation Eastern European immigrants. And with the boom of British born babies to Eastern European, and interethnic, parents, it is likely there will be understanding and acceptance of our fishing culture from future generations.

There are current laws, however, that adhere to the Polish viewpoint of removing fish. You can remove coarse fish under current EA laws. The fish removal byelaw states that you can take 15 river fish a day that are under 20 cm, plus a pike of under 65 cm and two grayling of between 30 and 38 cm. Although, certainly with fish under 20 cm, these laws are aimed at anglers wanting to catch fish for live or deadbaits rather than for consumption, this law could be made more aware to Eastern Europeans, which will help further build bridges and allow them to pursue fish (legally) in a manner that is much more identifiable to their culture.

With concerns about the diminishing amount of sea fish, celebrity chefs like Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall are championing easily sustainable coarse fish, especially carp, so, if done legally, could there be a place for venues that invite all (not just Eastern European) anglers to catch coarse fish for consumption, much in the same way that catch and keep trout fisheries operate? I think the majority of coarse anglers in the UK would oppose such a proposal, but it is certainly food for thought!

It is paramount that pike are unhooked correctly – Andy Black shows you how it’s done in this week’s issue.

Taking care of pike

One species of fish that have been slaughtered in the not so distant past in Britain are pike, with misinformed clubs, fishery owners and anglers removing or culling pike in order to protect fish stocks that were preyed upon.

Pike are now much more respected and better managed, and in the main are returned safely.

If you are looking to catch your first pike then you must read this week’s All The Answers in Angler’s Mail where expert predator angler Andy Black provides top advice to help you in your quest.

Pike can be found in every kind of freshwater waterbody so catching them shouldn’t prove too much of a problem if you follow Andy’s guidance on tackle and tactics.

The tricky part is the actual handling and unhooking of UK’s biggest native freshwater fish predator. Because of their fierce reputation as a predator doesn’t mean that you can be heavy-handed as they are actually a delicate fish that must be treated with respect.

Andy’s sequence on unhooking is an absolute must-read to ensure any pike you catch go back safely. Of course it’s not only the safety of pike you need to consider; you also need to be careful that you are not punctured by the teeth of pike when handling and unhooking them.

Andy’s advice is essential reading to put you on the right path in catching, unhooking and handling your first pike but if you are venturing out for the first time it is best that you go with a seasoned pike angler who can show you how to handle and unhook them correctly.

If you do not know a piker then visit the Pike Anglers Club website who will point you in the right direction to someone who can.

CLARKSVILLE, TENN. — The Big Cat Quest fishing competition came to town this weekend at McGregor Park, bringing professional fishermen and women from across several states.

Former world champion, Ken Freeman of Outdoor Promotions heads up the tour, which has an impressive list of sponsors, including Bass Pro Shops and Toyota.

The two-day event was the last of eight tournaments that Freeman hosted in 2012 and, like the others, the Clarksville event drew talent from all over the United States.

A bronze for Ireland

DEREK EVANS

FOR THE SECOND time in the last three years the Irish shore angling team has made the podium, after their bronze placing in this year’s world championships in the Veere region in Holland. They struck gold in South Africa in 2010.

Fishing was tough with anglers casting into a shipping channel that contained tackle grabbing ledges. Predominant species were dabs to 30cm, whiting, pouting and sole to 36cm. Most fish were taken at distance and zones were won with 15-25 fish.

In the final session the team had to close a four-point gap on the Italians, which they achieved admirably to claim the medal. “The qualification pool system has certainly proved a success,” Brian Cooke, of the IFSA, says.

Ireland’s team: T Lillis (manager), M Howlin, J Duggan, J O’Brien, D Kenrick, E Farrelly and K Begadon.

At a marine research conference in Cork earlier this month, the Minister for Natural Resources, Fergus O’Dowd, launched the Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) vessel, the Cosantóir Bradán, in her new role as a marine survey vessel.

The vessel will be employed as part of Infomar, the national marine mapping programme, and become part of providing the baseline mapping infrastructure in Irish near-shore waters, upon which future fisheries and government marine policy decisions will rely. The two-day seminar Enabling our Ocean Management included talks on ocean energy, hydrography and survey operations, aquaculture and fisheries, applied research, environment and heritage.

Ciaran Byrne, chief executive of IFI, says: “As a result of the cessation of driftnet fishing at sea, operations have switched to the use of faster inshore vessels that are more focused towards policing the fishery. We are delighted to be able to facilitate the mapping programme, particularly as recipients of the updated maps being produced.”

**

A Wrexham angler who reported a tagged salmon has won $1,500 in an incentive scheme operated by the North Atlantic Salmon Conservation Organisation (Nasco). The salmon, caught on the River Dee in Wales, was tagged in May, 2011, and recaptured five months later.

Dr Peter Hutchinson, of Nasco, says: “The Dee is among a small group of intensively monitored salmon rivers, producing vital information to support salmon management at local, national and international levels.”

**

The Newport River in Co Mayo had excellent water levels throughout September but only nine rods over a period of seven days. Sadly, this light fishing effort reflected the whole of the season.

**

Ballygarrett National School in Co Wexford is this year’s winner of the “Something Fishy” education programme. The school beat 125 entrants nationwide with their project Fishylympics and received their award and cheque of €500 from Minister for Natural Resources, Fergus O’Dowd, at Wexford Education Centre, Enniscorthy.

Presented on DVD, the project is a quirky blend of the Olympics, X-Factor and well-known public figures, and shows the obstacles our fish have to overcome to survive and win in the Fishylympics.

Something Fishy is an educational resource programme aimed at fifth and sixth class students at primary level and is designed and promoted by Inland Fisheries Ireland and Blackrock Educational Centre.

**

Howth Lifeboat annual supporters’ meeting will take place in Howth Yacht Club on Wednesday, November 14th, at8 pm. The meeting will include rescue video footage and a brief talk on the new Shannon Class All-Weather Boat which comes into service next year. All are welcome.

Australian Fishing: Gamakatsu Hobie 2013 bream series announced

GTS (Gamakatsu Teams Series) and Hobie have joined forces to form a new series of bream tournaments for 2013 - the Gamakatsu Hobie Fishing Series.

According to Frogleys Offshore (Gamakatsu distributors) Director Michael Starkey, "It is a great opportunity for extra exposure South of Sydney and with Hobie Kayak Australia's help we hope to grow and function the same way as the current GTS series does, with both powerboats and kayaks getting a platform to competitively compete, while maintaining a social and fun tournament where anyone at all can give it a go."

"In 2013, we will be expanding the current GTS series, which previous to this was based mostly in northern NSW areas. Dates are yet to be confirmed for the 2013 southern NSW rounds, however, we are excited about taking our expertise and current set-up into an expanded model into 2013."

"In 2012 Hobie Fishing and The Basin lure and fly Fishing Club struck a deal to have some rounds of the SSBS be qualifying rounds for the Hobie Kayak Fishing Series. This year the change of direction in the SSBS left an opportunity and a void in Bream tournaments, so we were encouraged to fill this gap, so Hobie and GTS formed a partnership to have this series return for 2013." said Hobie’s Steve Fields.

The series will consist of four to five rounds, with dates and venues announced soon, and a semi-final and GTS grand final at Forster with a boat package up for grabs.

2.5 Day Bluefin Tuna Fishing on the Ranger 85 (San Diego)

Here is a report from Captain Frank from one of the last trips of the season for them before heading back up to Channel Islands along with some testimonials from some happy fisherman.

"Having just returned from our 2.5 day trip fishing with many new customers as well as regulars, as we refer to those who frequent our trips, I felt compelled to highlight the trip. What a diverse group of individuals. There were those who had never fished offshore, those who had only experienced tuna fishing from six passenger yachts from resorts, a couple from the industry taking a day off and many friends spending time together reconnecting. Fishing. That's what I love about my chosen profession.watching the angler, the individual as they not only enjoy themselves catching fish but spending time with their friends and making new connections. It's easy while on a trip of this nature, everyone has something in common; the ocean. Having had the luxury of seeing more sunrises and sunsets than the average individual over the past 35 years coupled with the fact that it's over the ocean, an island or some watery horizon, I never take for granted the sheer beauty of my surroundings. This particular trip we had the full gamut of weather .choppy on the way out followed by calm seas on our first day and good big game fishing.

Day two was still nice conditions, yet squalls moved through with water spouts followed by rainbows and blue skies. We were treated to an inspiring sunset as well as a productive day of catching. Typically I write a trip summary based upon size and quantity of fish, but this trip was so much more.
Thank you all for fishing with us and we certainly look forward to sharing more experiences with you in the future.whether offshore for tuna or around the Channel Islands seeking seabass, halibut and rockfish. I always find it difficult to selectively name customers on our trips in my blogs as I am afraid to leave anyone out. This trip I need the entire manifest in front of me to accurately acknowledge all. Please don't take offense if I do not mention you personally. Bridget and family.I hope you enjoyed the trip.we enjoyed fishing with you. Malcolm, always fun to see you onboard. Brian.I am always amazed when I speak to a customer and they tell me how far they came just to go fishing. Thank you so very much for spending a couple days with us and I look forward to fishing with you again. Matt, your energy and enthusiasm is and was contagious. Good times. Thank you all for making the trip enjoyable and for fishing hard.
Enjoy the images and please keep in touch.
Capt. Frank"

Hey Captain Frank, my buddy Terry and I had an outstanding trip with you and your crew. It was my first trip above a 2dayer and I'm not sure I can go back to anything less than 2.5er's now. I was the short guy from AZ in the ugly green jeans, yellow shirt and white hat,  who fought that BF for about an hour on the jigmaster. Terry and I saw the trip on H&M's website and hem 'n hawed about it, finally deciding that it was the right one for us, oh how grateful we are. Your operation was professional in every aspect, to include the mistake that Ricky made about filleting my 6 YF and correcting that mistake and cleaning the fish even after your boat was cleaned up for your next trip. Thank you very much for a great trip and the best pre-trip seminar I've ever had. Finally, I was wondering if it would be too much for you to find either the picture of Robert and I with the gaff of that BF, or if you could find a picture of one of the bigger BF that would suffice for a taxidermist to do a reproduction? I have been directed toward Lyon's and O'Haver, is that who you would use? I'll look for you boat next summer.

Thank you,
Mark McCabe

WOW Frank!!!
Thank you for such fabulous memories on the Ranger 85....and an incredible lucrative killer tuna trip! it was the best birthday present ever for my son, Nate who turned 34 and wanted to try for the "big boys", and finally catch those super sea bullets, the ahi yellow fin tunas and dorados. His wish certainly came true and it was for the likes of you in bringing us to the motherlode of the sea in snagging them hiding out in the kelp and roaming in rogue bands all over the Mexican waters. We will absolutely plan to go out again with you and your ace crew and enjoy more frantic lively fishing.  Here are some photos I took of our trip for you to share and keep of the awesome trip. There was one photo I thought of YOU with me and one of my tunas. It was not in the batch you sent, but if you do have it, I would surely treasure it from you to remember the ecstatic moment. Here are my pics you should use to advertise your superb crew. I am sending them in 2 diff. e-mails.

Many many thanks,
Bridget Duffy-Thorn, "Bob" (John R. ) Thorn, and Nathan Duffy

All the stars lined up for one last perch fishing trip - The Daily Record

CLEVELAND -- Never has it been more evident to "strike, while the iron is hot," than this past Thursday.

With a week's worth of rain and gale-force winds coming in, and autumn quickly slipping away, Thursday was the picture-perfect day for the last trip of the year to Lake Erie.

I wasn't the only one with the same idea, as half of northeast Ohio made it up to the big waters on a gorgeous October day. From Toledo to Conneaut, fishermen were out for a day of perching. All the conditions pointed to a great day, unseasonably warm 80-degree temperatures, willing fish, and little to no waves.

My brother Don and I were the first to pull into Wildwood Marina, just east of downtown Cleveland, at 6 a.m. We wanted to get there early to avoid the Cleveland traffic, get the boat in the water, buy our shiners, and get to fishing.

But, we were so early that the bait shop wasn't open yet, so we floated around the bay and did some bass fishing. Soon, boats started rolling in and the shop opened.

Still dark out, I bought four dozen minnows (in the case of minnows, I always under-buy than over-buy, as almost always you get more than you ask for) and questioned those running the bait shop at Wildwood where to go.

"You can go anywhere you like," was the smart-aleck reply.

Then I was pointed to a pair of possible locations, "off the grass" in 32 feet of water where the fish were fewer, but bigger, or straight out in 35 feet of water, where the fish were more plentiful, but smaller.

It was still fairly dark when we motored past the break wall, and out to the fishing grounds, so finding the grassy spot on the shoreline for a location was a bit iffy. And even though my fish finder wasn't showing any marks, I picked a spot in 35 feet of water and anchored.

It wasn't long before the sun finally rose over the horizon, and the first fish was in the cooler. Then another, and another, and another.

The fishing was good, so much so that we started getting picky about what perch we kept -- just 10s, 11s and 12s.

I was fishing a single line with a flasher 8 inches above the hook, and Don was using the classic perch spreader.

Doubles weren't a problem, and neither was catching. The fish were tight to the bottom. Drop your line to the bottom, and then have fun.

And, waves weren't a problem either, which for my brother and I, was the best part of the day. We were fishing, and not chumming the water (if you know what I mean). Shirt sleeves on Lake Erie catching perch in late October -- it was a great day.

We were doing so well catching fish, that we hadn't paid attention to what was going on around us. At one point, we looked up and noted a fleet of boats surrounding us. For once in my Lake Erie perch fishing life, I picked the spot that all the boats ended up at. Even Wildwood Marina's Linda Mae head boat pulled up and anchored within 200 feet of us.

The bite did slow at 10 a.m., so we called it a day and started in. We had plenty of perch, no need to get greedy, but we did try some smallmouth fishing before calling it a day. We didn't catch any smallies, but did find some good structure that is now in my memory banks for future trips.

It was back to the marina, where the action was crazy as boats were lined up to get both off the lake and on the lake. The weather had fishermen fired up for a final day on Erie. A traffic cop was needed as launch ramp etiquette was not being used, but I kept my cool and finally got the boat out of the water by noon.

After getting our licenses and fish checked by a wildlife officer, we started for home, feeling good about "striking, while the iron was hot."

I realize even more now how important it was to go when all the stars lined up, as this week the weather forecast is not only rain every day, but the waves forecast on Lake Erie is possible 10-18-footers. The lake will be unfishable for some time after this week's storm.

But this past Thursday, it was as good as it gets.

The Genius Romanian Carp Angling Team Beat England By Showing Up

The Genius Romanian Carp Angling Team Beat England By Showing Up Five Months Early And Getting The Carp Addicted To Their Bait

Sometimes sports can seem so formulaic. Show up, play by the rules, stay between the lines, get your check, go home. Where's the intrigue, the gamesmanship, the clinical insanity? International carp-fishing competitions, that's where.

The Daily Mail and The Independent have both published pun-laden pieces about the recent shenanigans at the 14th World Carp Angling Championships, also known as WorldCarp2012 at the official event website, which currently boasts the headline, "ROMANIA IS THE NEW WORLD CHAMPION ON CARPFISHING." Here's The Independent's report:

Winners Romania had spent the five months preceding the tournament feeding the fish of Lake Corbu with a secret bait recipe.

Unfortunately for the 10-man England side, who finished 18th, they turned up at last month's tournament with £10,000 worth of traditional "boilies".

The mash-up of flour, egg and flavourer such as blended dried dog food is popular with British fish but failed to spark a flicker of interest in the Romanian carp which were happy to gorge on the feed offered on the hooks of their hosts which they had grown obligingly fat on throughout the summer.

The debacle has prompted fury in the highly-competitive world of carp fishing, a discipline where technical know-how and secret techniques can make the team tactics of cycle road racing appear as complex and cut throat as a round of tiddlywinks.

Hear that, cyclists? You're all pussies. Fish some carp and get back to us. The Daily Mail wrote that the "[d]isappointed team" from the UK "could only watch as fish leaped for the host's bait," which is a great image and quite possibly something that literally happened.

Lake Corbu is in Romania, so this is really just an extravagant extension of home-field advantage, like the vintage Celtics refrigerating the opponent locker rooms, except with more carp.

Romania caught 1.7 metric tons of fish, and sent at least three teams—the South African and French contingents were also cited as having been out of the special-bait-loop—home with practically no fish to show for their efforts, and no hardware at all. The UK's team manager conceded that the Romanian carp/bait acclimation strategy wasn't technically cheating, but "was against the spirit of fair play," which is crybaby for "we hadn't considered the Romanians would start five months early." The lesson, as always: cheat.
