Published on Wednesday 31 October 2012 07:24It is going to be a very busy weekend on our local fenland waters as pike anglers from around the country make their way to Whittlesey to fish the annual Angling Trust British Pike Championship.
The venue will take in most of the fen drains around Whittlesey including the Twenty Foot Drain Glassmoor Bank and perhaps even Cock Bank. So my advice to local anglers thinking of fishing these waters this weekend is to give them a miss.
The event takes place on Saturday, but on Friday and Sunday there will also be a lot of bank activity.
Over the past few years we have seen quite a few local rods making the frame and indeed winning.
Townsend Lakes
The Wednesday open matches have found the Kingfisher Pool in good form, fishery boss Colin Begbie topped the field with a level 75lb from peg 4 taken on the long pole with pellet and a few better samples late on in the match with luncheon meat. Ricky James second 72lb 8oz, Neil Pesky on 55lb 2oz.
Sunday’s open match on the prolific Cuckoo Pool was topped by Ben Jackson with a fine 141lb 2oz from peg 9. The long pole with pellet saw Ben taking small carp while maggot fished down the middle saw a good run of ide to see him well clear of the field. Harry Morgan 112lb 12oz, Steve Sharpe 112lb 8oz. Black Dyke on the North Level System around Tydd Gote once again hit form for the Wednesday Open. Victorious with 10lb 1oz was Emneth tackle dealer Mick Asker, on pole with pinkie taking small roach and skimmers. John Taylor second 6lb 15oz, Ray Groom 5lb 6 ½ oz. The Wednesday matches draw at Black Dyke at 9am, Sunday draw is at Clough at 9am.
You can always tell winter is not far away when the likes of Decoy Lakes sees anglers struggling. That was the case for Fenland Rods on the Six Island Pool. Match winner Tim Bates found a few better samples late on with sweetcorn fished close in with a modest 61lb 10oz. Runner-up John Smith caught regularly but had a bad last hour with 60lb 8oz. Mac Campbell third 54lb 15oz, Matt Lutkin 49lb 14oz. This weekend is on the Snake Pool at Head Fen Fishery.

Fields End Water at Doddington continues to fish reasonably well, in the latest match it was close at the top of the leader board with Trevor Cousins just taking the honours with 76lb 10oz fishing a pellet waggler from peg 1. Pushing him all the way to the final whistle was Martin Parker, he caught on a groundbait waggler and later on the pole for 76lb 8oz. In third place with 53lb 4oz was Mac Campbell.
Rose and Crown
Chatteris rod Kevin Bridgement is the man to beat right now, he topped the field in the club’s latest two matches. On the Magpie Pool at Pidley Kevin bagged 57lb 11oz, Bill Savage 45lb second, followed by Paul Killingworth 21lb 15oz.
At the weekend Kevin was out in front again, on the Cuckoo Canal Pool at Townsend lakes. Drawn on peg 5 he fished maggot close in to record 63lb 4oz. Runner-up Mick Woodham on 49lb 10oz, Dave Beeken 40lb 6oz.
