Catch of the Day at Captiva Island | For Shore Fishing

The cold front that moved through southwest Florida Saturday night and early Sunday made fishing a bit challenging. The wind was howling out of the north. Therefore, boat fishing was not the best idea.

I decided to meet up with my friend Capt. Dave Torrance for a shore fishing trip. Our destination was Blind Pass between Sanibel and Captiva Islands. Capt. Dave brought his sand flea rake and was already on duty when I showed up with three dozen shrimp about 9:00 a.m. Sand fleas are a kind of mole crab. They make great bait and Capt. Dave had already scrounged up a good two dozen or so.

The action was constant all morning while we fished a good outgoing tide. I managed to catch a few whiting and a couple of black drum. The whiting were good size and I could have easily put a few in the cooler. Whiting are a fine panfish and make tasty tablefare. As an angler, I was just happy to be catching fish in such tough weather conditions.

Capt. Dave stayed loyal to his sand fleas in hopes of catching a pompano. That would have been fine, as pompano are a fish much more sought after for the skillet or frying pan. However, it was not to be today. His take for the morning was one sheepshead. They are another fish that love to eat crabs of any sort. His sheepie was just under keeper size and was safely returned to the surf to put on pounds and inches.

With the cold front that moved through the area, the barometer drop, and the howling wind, we really didn’t expect much from our outing. However, we still had a great morning of saltwater fishing, old friend banter, and camaraderie. It was an outdoors outing that makes you thankful you’re still alive and breathing the fine fresh sea air.

“May your lines be tight and your shake off’s and break off’s memorable.”
