Gateshead man David Dixon lands personal best cod fishing at Newbiggin UK

SOME cracking fish have been taken from most marks. David Dixon of Gateshead was well rewarded for his trip to Newbiggin, taking a personal best cod of 12lb.

However, it was Bedlington Station’s Evening Open that produced catches reminiscent of years ago.

Darren Shields, fishing at Cresswell, took four cod for 19lb 1oz, including the heaviest fish at 7lb 10oz. Ron Smith fished at Blyth to take a bag of four cod for 18lb 2oz, followed by Peter Stewart with five cod for 17lb 3oz, also from Blyth, with Lynemouth giving Dave Crudace four cod for 15lb 12oz.

Rob Thirwell took two cod for 11lb from Newbiggin, John Bell taking the second heaviest at 6lb 14oz. Pleasure anglers are doing well. Tony Grant fished at Whitburn taking cod of 7lb and 5lb 8oz. Kevin Scott took one of 7lb. Steve Walker had a good session at Hartlepool taking nine cod for 23lb. Dean Turnbull took six cod from the Hawthorn and the Blast, while South Shields pier gave Gareth Gardiner six for 32lb.

Paul Gallon took two cod to 6lb from Hartley, then another four cod between 4-6lb from Cullercoats.

Hartlepool is still giving match anglers sport. Syd Burcher won Hartlepool pirates’ Christmas Fayre with a cod of 6lb 1oz in a bag of five for 14lb 7oz.

Colin Bell fished the Haven to win Whitley Bay’s Christmas match with seven fish for 8lb 15oz, Ian Galbraith taking the heaviest of 8lb 6oz from Hartley.

Micky Burke won Seaton Sluice’s “Barry Tweddle” Christmas Fayre with a cod of 4lb 10oz taken at Foxton. Mick Bell won their next match with three cod for 7lb 15oz from Hartley.

John Bell won both Newbiggin matches – the first with two cod for 8lb 7oz from Amble and the next with two cod for 11lb 7oz, best 9lb 1oz from west End Rocks.

Sunderland marks produced in Eastenders’ Christmas match. Dave McCready took 16 for 15lb 14oz, followed by Bill Jackson with 17 for 15lb 3oz.

Garry Conlin won Sunderland’s Christmas match with 16 whiting for 12lb 3oz, Paul Robinson taking 15 for 10lb 12oz. Andy Rutherford had a hectic time at the Glass Centre in Ryhope’s Christmas match, taking 16 fish for 5.595gm (13.7lb), Colin Smedley taking the heaviest at 5lb 5oz.

Tynemouth’s Christmas match produced a few surprises with pollock of 3lb 9oz taken by Paul Scott and 3lb 8oz taken by Bill Davison. Glen Campbell had the heaviest bag of 7lb 2oz. Across the river South Shields took a few fish from the pier, Paul Smith winning their first match with eight for 10lb 6oz, and Marc Wilkinson their next with two cod for 7lb 12oz, the best 5lb 3oz
