UK coastal fishing holiday hotspots

Angling is a year round sport, not many people understand quite how special it can be in the winter but we do! The weather might be a little cold, there’s the potential of wind and rain but that can just make reaching the end goal even sweeter.
Add to this the fact that you can spend time warming yourself up after in one of the beautiful UK cottages there is to offer and you have a winter wonderland that you can’t refuse. Here we will look at some of the top places to fish, and offer some suggestions as to where you might be able to stay to make the most of fishing this winter.
South Devon
Devon is home to wonderful tourist attractions, and when it comes to fishing some say it is one of the best spots in England. With a beautiful coastline to enjoy and fish from, it is known as a particularly good place to catch Bass – especially in an evening.
With fishing venues aplenty, you can get hooked into angling here more often after you’ve enjoyed the amazing Slapton Sands, Hopes Nose and Langstone Rock. Tranquillity amongst the peace and quiet makes South Devon a fishing paradise. But, where should you stay?Cottage suggestion: Pointridge Court, Loddiswell – Found in this delightful village that is found near Kingsbridge between Plymouth and Torquay, this cottage is the perfect base to enjoy the fishing hotspots that can be found nearby. Slapton Sands is close and there are many other estuaries and beaches to enjoy here in the South Hams region. What’s more is that pets are allowed in property if you have a dog to bring with you and there is plenty to do around if you’re taking family along.
Dorset
These two neighbouring counties are found on the same coastline, which makes the fact that they are both coastal fishing hotspots unsurprising. Shore fishing is big in Dorset, and when you couple this with less rain than most of England and ample winter parking you’re almost ready to pack your bags and go.
In these months it is time to head out there and brave the weather to reap the rewards of fish like whiting, flounder and cod. Once you get there then there are many ways to get fishing, with piers and harbour walls on offer or muddy estuaries if you prefer. What happens after my day fishing? Well, you head to a nice warm holiday cottage of course.
Cottage suggestion: Old Higher Lighthouse Branscombe Lodge, Portland Bill – As opportunities go, they don’t get much more unique than this. A stunning and peaceful location found along the Jurassic Coast, these Grade II listed cottages are brilliantly furnished and just a few miles away from Weymouth and other well-known fishing locations. With the chance for walking and bird watching, this is a wonderful experience not to be missed.
Connemara
From the south west of England we head to the Republic of Ireland and this unspoilt, rugged area in which the number of things to do are vast. With a friendly and warm atmosphere from the locals, there is a wonderland of adventure waiting in the region. One of the best activities, fishing.
While the Lough Corrib lake is one of the most famous fishing areas here, you can also find rewards by dipping your rod into the Atlantic Ocean. From cod to tuna, trout to salmon there are so many possibilities for what you can fish here in the winter. With scope for family entertainment around, it is a spot that offers costal cottages to warm up after those cold days.
Cottage suggestion: Robin’s Cottage, Cleggan – In the heart of County Galway, and near Clifden, this quiet country cottage is a great base for exploring the angling possibilities of this coastal region. Just 18 miles from Connemara National Park, and a stone’s through from the popular and vibrant town of Clifden, it is a brilliant spot for a short break. Sleeping six, and with an open fire to warm you all up after a day out it really is a lovely location.
Sutherland
We head off to Scotland, a country which in itself can boast some of the best sea fishing in the United Kingdom. A popular sport, there are so many places to enjoy and so many spots to brush up on your local angling knowledge that it’s hard to know where to head to for your next fishing trip – Sutherland is every fisherman’s dream.
Beautiful and remote are two words that aptly describe the spot, and they could be used to describe the whole of the Scottish Highlands in fairness. From tiny islands to wild cliffs, there is so much to see and plenty of trout and salmon to fish.
Cottage suggestion: Recroy, Nedd – Found in the Northern Highlands and Cairngorms National Park, this holiday home is the definition of peace a quiet. Sleeping five and boasting a warm open fire, this cosy property is a single storey cottage with views across the hillside. A perfect base for the family, you can enjoy the trout and salmon fishing while the others take in the other beautiful surroundings.
