Fishing ban because of sharks
05-Dec-2011 | Sapa | 0 commentsOFFICIALS are considering a ban on fishing close to recreational beaches in Port Elizabeth, the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality said yesterday.

This was after it became apparent that chumming - a custom of throwing cut-up fish into the sea to catch sharks - was taking place close to surfing, paddling and swimming areas, police spokesman Kupido Baron said in a statement.
The municipality beach office has recommended a ban on angling from Kings Beach (Southern) Harbour Wall, to Flat Rock (Beacon).
Areas of 500m within lifeguard demarcated bathing areas would be affected.
These included Bluewater Bay, St Georges Strand, Brighton Beach and Wells Estate.
Wild Side beaches such as Maitlands, Blue Horizon Bay and Van Stadens River Mouth are also included.
The ban was considered after members of the public raised complained that chumming close to recreation areas could be dangerous.
The municipality said a public participation process would be started soon.
Baron said the measures would not mean a complete ban.
Angling would still be allowed from Beacon down towards Willows, Schoenmakerskop and locations outside bathing areas.
If the bylaws are enacted, transgressors could face a maximum fine of R10000 and the concerned areas would be monitored by closed circuit television.
