Narooma Sport and Gamefishing Club report

LAST weekend saw our monthly competition run and won with many anglers getting amongst the fish with ocean, beach and estuary fishing in full swing.

Beach fishing was very popular and with salmon, tailor, bream, flathead and yellow eye mullet everywhere it was not hard to catch a feed.

Click here to check out a gallery of this week’s fishing pics

Our beaches are producing there best catches for a long time and with the tides and weather on the anglers’ side results were outstanding for all that fished.

Outside fishing at Montague Island has been hot with snapper, mowies, flathead and leather jacket as back up, plenty of fish were caught.

The snapper are so prolific at Montague, anglers are getting them every drift, and while there are some bigger fish, many are just over legal size, suggesting perhaps they are coming to the island from all parts.

The kingfish are hot one day and cold the next but more hot than not and there are plenty about for those persisting at the island.

Anglers have had difficulty without live bait, with the big fish only taking livies over the weekend.

One very worthy alternative is to use whole dead baits like sauries or squid on a running rig, with ball sinker and long leaders, as this has delivered for some anglers.

Flathead fishing as always is going great all the way down to Bermagui via The Step and other regular spots.

Inside fishing is picking up too with bream, tailor and flathead the most popular.

Our winners this month wee Gary Reid in the men’s division, Kerry Easthaughffe in the ladies and Courtney Apps again took out the juniors. Well done to all these members who seem to show regularly that they are keen anglers that can catch fish.

The next monthly competition will be held on March 19-20, which is the same weekend as our ANSA Convention and will still take place with the weigh in and BBQ at 4pm on Sunday, March 12 as normal.

Our annual ANSA Convention, which is the club’s biggest event of the year, is on next month with entries coming in from all over the countryside.

If anyone out there wishes to be a part of this convention, they need to get down to the club and fill in an entry form.

The basics are that there is an introductory meeting on the Thursday night at the club with registration, rules and weekend happenings.

Friday the competition begins in earnest. The club will have breakfast and evening meals every day and the bar will be open.

Sunday will see the presentations and close of the tournament, and at 4pm we will see the monthly competition results and babecue.

This will be a fantastic weekend that you don’t want to miss. There will be raffles, meals, prizes and food and drink for all so get amongst the action at the Narooma Sport and Gamefishing Club on the weekend, including Thursday night, from March 9-12.

Do not miss this one and if you only want to look and not take part you are welcome to come down and share this event. Even if you are just visiting or not a member, come and see what’s happening.

Further details and information about these two upcoming events will be published at the club and in the newspaper for all over the next few weeks. Open to all with an invitation for us to you, come on down we don’t bite.

Moruya and Tuross reports

DUE to the recent foul weather most of our fishos have been contained indoors, so we apologise for the need to bunch Moruya and Tuross together.

Hopefully the weather will be kinder this week!

However, when we were blessed with fishable days, it became apparent that down the front of Tuross was the hotspot for flathead on soft plastics, whiting on beach worms and bream on SX40’s and Cameons.

Amongst Tuross’ snags are some well sized perch, responding best to Instinct Quickas. If it’s Moruya you’re fishing, the flats around town wharf are providing some decent sized flounder hitting the prawns pretty hard.

The hole in the wall is fishing well for luderick, which as per usual respond best to green weed. The flathead are on the bite at Yarragee, but if it’s the bass you’re after, it’s best to head up the Deua.

Rocks and Beaches:

The well-formed gutters at Goulbourn workers remain successful for large catches of salmon up to 3-4kg, with the lure of choice being Arma Twistees or if you’re a bait fisher, ganged pillies.

Live beach worms will almost guarantee a successful session for bream and whiting regardless of your beach of choice, and if you’re not one of the gifted who can catch the worms themselves, take the much easier route and secure your tub in store.

If you’re fishing the break wall, you’re likely to be rewarded with salmon, tailor and flathead. Again, the salmon will respond to Arma Twistees, which are a smart choice because the tailor will hit them just as hard.

Offshore:

Captain Ron aboard Winda Woppa I and II reports sea anchors are quite necessary given the current weather conditions, so make sure you fish smart and fish safe.

Out around the 40-70m mark, with a water temperature of 21.5 degrees Celsius, large catches of snapper of 2-3kg and mowies from 3-4kg are reported to be hitting squid bait hard.

Decent sized pigfish, Chinamen leatherjackets and nannygai are rewarding fishos who throw out some fish bait. There’s huge numbers of kingfish around the 80-85cm mark chasing the squid bait, so it’s well worth stocking up on squid jigs to catch your bait yourself. Captain Ron advises bookings are essential if you’re after a trip marlin fishing on the shelf.

VIP Member of the Week -

VIP member Damon is congratulated, or more sent sympathy, from Team Tackle World Moruya this week for surviving one scary experience while fishing! A close encounter of the unwelcome kind came when a great white shark one metre longer than Damon’s boat decided to chase the kingfish on the end of the line and pop up its head to say a very toothy hello. In the face – quite literally – of a great white, Tackle World Moruya congratulates Damon on his ability to fish another day!

Safe fishing!

Dalmeny Anglers venture down to Wonboyn

THE Dalmeny Anglers Club annual meet was held last Friday and Saturday in surprisingly good conditions at Wonboyn Lake south of Eden.

With 20 contestants participating, some lovely catches of a variety of species were taken and the biggest fish caught went to Matt Tubb with a 55cm flathead and the “Best Boat” trophy was won by Matt's team of Jimmy Sharpe, Brian Brown and Don Brown in his boat “Slaughter”.

A great three days of mateship took place and a bond of "what went on tour, stays on tour" applied.

Just a reminder that Dalmeny Fishing Club will be hosting its monthly fishing competition this weekend, February 18-19. Weigh in will be on Sunday, at 1pm. We hope to see you all there!

RobPax: More mud crabs on South Coast

SCORES of smiley mackerel and frog mouth pilchards have invaded the Clyde River over the last couple of weeks.

A lot of them will probably get flushed out with the recent rain and more heavy rain predicted, but the baitfish will be back with predators in tow when the water clears.

In the meantime there has been some less expected patterns. A couple of weeks ago Rob Fish from Clyde River House Boats reported that his customers caught some mud crabs to 1.5 kilos. This sparked a lot of interest, so I rang Rob and found out some more.

For a start the crabs were not even caught in pots, just on standard flathead fishing lines! Further more the family who caught the mud crabs caught 5 that trip, and the biggest, nicknamed ‘Hercules’ actually weighed 1.9 kilos, not 1.5 kilos as was first reported…it was big enough to feed the whole family!

As it turns out, Mud crabs have been a bit more common on the Clyde than usual this season, especially up around Nelligen where experienced ‘crabbers’ have been bagging out at times with their crab pots. But newcomers catching 5 without a pot-wow!

Global warming? The east Australian currents in a La Nina year? Or what else? Who cares-this is a big bonus for locals and tourists alike, lets hope they still happen when the run off clears.

BREAM KING

Captain Kev from Wilderness Fishing is Mallacoota’s undisputed king of fishing on lure, so when he says there is some absolutely massive bream, flathead and whiting available at Mallacoota, you better believe it.

But that doesn’t they are easy to catch them-many Mallacoota anglers I spoke too missed out! He mumbled something about salinity, weather cycles and slow retrieves. Sounds like it’s time again for me to get down and find out just what new techniques he has pioneered on this amazing system. Can’t wait.

PLASTICS AIN’T PLASTICS

You may have read that the Storm Pro Shad is one of my favorite jewfish, flathead, snapper and murray cod soft plastics because the tail wriggles seductively even when the lure is just moving along at a snails pace, but there is much more to it.

I’d been playing around with some different plastics again to see what else is new on the market, but found that the super soft varieties that wiggle well at slow speed don’t stay on the hook that well. Further more few have the baby tailor shaped profile-and baby tailor are our most common estuary bait fish thru much of the year.

Yet another obstacle was a finding an ultra thin body that permits hookups even when the lure fouls on the bite, as often happens. Another thing I look for is prominent ribs to hold scent in the body.

The Pro Shad has none of the above problems, yet all of the positive attributes, and this is why I came back to it yet again-it is still the best soft plastic of its type on the market.

Meanwhile out on the coast line Adam Giatras and friends evened the score with a few big jewfish when they speared two honkers one of which was well over the 1.4 meter mark! Now before line anglers say hey-that’s cheating, consider this-Adam is an experienced spear fisho, and has been trying to get his first jewfish for over 5 years!

All this is off the back of the bonafide 100 pound jewfish caught near the Shoalhaven River mouth a few weeks back. Seems like there is no end to the resurgence of this species. Punch my name into the You Tube Search Bar and you can see some local video footage of this amazing species.

SMITH AND DAWSON

I noticed that when I say it this heading it has a Clint Eastwood ‘Smith and Wesson’ ring to it. That’s because when locals Ray Smith and Dean Dawson fish together off the rocks the fish are in the firing line.

The duo hit pretty point and hooked an 8 foot hammerhead shark on Rays new Okuma Salina 2 Spin Reel. The fight was gun smoking hot-these sharks will make a similar sized marlin blush in the combined speed and power department. After nearly being spooled twice Ray got the beast in and tagged it. A shark this big off the rocks on spin gear-that’s something!

See you on the water
