Wild and cold but anglers battle on - Coarse Angling

ALTHOUGH the weather has been wild and cold, those anglers who ventured out on to Whittle Dene this week enjoyed some fine sport.

The lower match lake and the Great Southern have both been in form giving up some fine catches of roach, skimmers and odd perch.

Steve Wood from Burradon visited the fishery several times this week and recorded catches of 12lb and 11lb 8oz with his best catch 19lb of roach, all taken from the Great Southern on feeder tactics. Brian Evans recorded 62 roach for a total of 13lb 8oz, while Trevor Wilson was rewarded with a fine all roach catch totalling 13lb.

The Carr’s day-ticket fishery at Stockton is a Stillwater in form, yielding bags of up to 150 fish per session made up of skimmers, roach, crucians, golden orfe and ide for weights of over 20lb.

On the Wear some encouraging chub catches have been reported in the 2-4lb bracket falling to luncheon meat fished on a rolling ledger with the best being 4lb 8oz. A few chub have showed recently on the Eden, where grayling have been harder to locate since the river rose, and again dace were caught at Warwick Hall before the spate.

Darlington Brown Trout AC fished the Tees at Croft on Sunday where Mark Burgess caught 5lb 2oz of grayling caught on stick float and maggot to win, with Steve Brown (4lb 5oz) second and Bobby Trees third on 4lb. The LTAA match on Saturday on the Ingleby to Bowesfield stretches of the Tees saw Dave Smiddy win with 7lb 5oz of roach and dace ahead of Brian Clay with 4lb 12oz and Kevin Weighell with 3lb 4oz.

Northallerton AC's match on the River Swale at Scruton saw Simon McArdle use bomb and cheese to tempt four chub and win with 13lb 4oz. Fred Hardcastle was runner-up on 8lb 5oz and Steve Evans third with 4lb 14oz.

At Esthwaite the predator fishing is still good at present with fish being reported from both boat and bank. Alan Dixon fished the car park banking with dead baits and landed three pike to 16lb, while Steve Hincks and Darren Lord have been boat fishing and reported plenty of doubles taken on a variety of methods. The best reported pike this week was taken as part of a three-fish haul by Ian Johnson, a fine 24lb 2oz specimen, taken on a lure.
