UK Plans for seafront spark pier fishing concerns

FOLKESTONE Sea Angling Association came out on top at the latest fixture from the town pier against Martin Walters Sea Angling Club, writes Alan Yates.

A new match on the calendar, it proved popular with those that competed, although with current plans being discussed for the sea front development, lots of concern about the future of the fishing from the pier has been expressed.

Folkestone finished the winner by a clear margin although that was seen as less important than the fact the two clubs had got together and the future of this event, and more inter-club liaison, looked certain.

The Folkestone club also held an evening beach competition and this was won by Martyn Reid, of Folkestone, with 5.640kg of dogfish and whiting. Second was Greg Dixon with 5.430kg and third Ray Coyne with 4.440kg

The heaviest flatfish was a dab of 110grams for Folkestone tackle dealer Phil Tanner and the biggest round fish a welcome codling of 1.060kg for Greg Dixon.

More news from Folkestone pier is that it is being closed at night from now on, from 6pm until 6am. The closure is not fishing related and will not affect club competitions.

OTHER club results include the Seabrook Sea Anglers Association event for the Mick's Cash Pot. Winner was Michael Warne, of Hythe, with 15 fish for 6.30lb. Second was Cliff Sharp of Hythe with 6lb and third, Paul Gunner of Hythe with 5.8lb. The heaviest fish was a bass of 1.04lb for Steve Harvey.

Freshwater angling results include the latest round of the Cinque Ports AS disabled section fished at Little Evegate. Junior angler Paul Fagg topped the entry with 40lb 8oz. Second was Paul Goss with 10lb.

The uncertainty over the access to all areas during the forthcoming British Sea Angling Championships at Deal and Walmer beaches this Sunday is all over thanks to negotiations between main organisers Deal 1919 Angling Club and the contractor carrying out the work on Deal beaches.

Although competitors will no longer be able to select their zone, all of the 400 pegs allowed for the event will be available.

Deal 1919 Angling Club's president Pat Heath said that pre-entries had topped 100 and the eventual number of entries was expected to exceed 250.

The book in and draw is on Saturday night (and 9am Sunday morning) from 7pm. Fishing on Sunday is from 11am until 4pm.

The event includes separate senior, ladies, junior and team championships.

GOOD news for sea angling came from a survey conducted recently on the worth of sea anglers to the national economy.

Anglers were interviewed at Deal at the weekend by a DEFRA official and one angler reported that the survey results suggested a bass of 27cm that he returned alive (undersized) was worth £57 per pound to the National economy.
