Corio Bay
Fishing the west side of the Wilson Spit on Saturday morning were Murray Scott and Alex Andjelkovic whose first snapper was aboard by 4.35 am, the first of three they caught before daybreak.
However, there was barely a lull in proceedings before their rods were burying once more giving them their bag limit of three fish each, the biggest around 6 kg, before they were back at the Avalon boat ramp by 7.15 am.
The following morning, Carl Alexander was Murray’s companion while fishing the same area. This time though they had no fish by daybreak, none at all. But that was soon to change:
Their first two fish were around the 4.5 kg mark, and then Carl hooked an obviously bigger fish that greeted the scales for a verdict of 7.5 kg. That was followed by another three good size fish and they were done.
Fishing nearby, was Murray’s nephew Nathan who hadn’t turned a reel all morning, but a move to the area where Murray and Carl had just left paid dividends with one snapper of 8.8 kg and another of 5.9 kg.
Also fishing the Wilson Spit last week were Paul and Anita Kovzan and daughter Emily. Anchored up on the outgoing tide it wasn’t long before their first snapper was aboard. They followed that with three other good size fish before heading back in.
Others to catch snapper include Neale Walker who caught snapper around 6 kg on each of the two trips he made of an evening last week along the Wilson Spit Channel.
Last Wednesday afternoon, Andrew Phillips, Chris Stamalos and Mark Sesar fished in around three metres of water with their whiting tackle off the Mountain View Quarries.
Not only were they successful on the whiting, the biggest of which measured 41 cm, but they also caught a number of flathead to 35 cm and several pinkie snapper from just over legal size to a kilogram.

Bellarine Peninsula
Daniel Stranger found whiting for his clients aboard Geelong Charters at St Leonards and Queenscliff on Saturday with the best fish, some around the 42 cm mark, coming from Queenscliff.
Rod Ludlow of Beachlea Boat Hire at Indented Head reports that his clients had success on a variety of species including gummy shark and snapper to 2 kg or so along the north west edge of the Prince George Bank at the weekend.
Rod also reports that anglers fishing from the pier at St Leonards caught a number of respectable snapper in the evening following last Thursday’s northerly blow.

Freshwater
Fishing Lake Elingamite on Sunday afternoon, Trevor Holmes catch on trolled lures included a 2.1 kg brown trout and a one kilogram redfin. Trevor also caught a number of newly released rainbow trout that were returned.Last Wednesday afternoon, Trevor, along with Cassandra Baker and her Partner, fished Lake Tooliorook where Cassandra caught two rainbow trout of 1.6 and 1.7 kg. One was aught on orange Berkley Powerbait, the other on a trolled lure.
Down Portland way, Bob McPherson and Jim Goodall headed over to Cape Nelson where they caught sweep to 800 grams or so.
Bob also reports that whiting have been taken by local anglers, both in the vicinity of Blacknose Point and along the north shore toward Narrawong while land based anglers continue to take good size whiting from the pontoon adjacent the commercial fisherman’s landing within the harbour.
Western District
Doug Lucas reports that Gordon Thompson fished the Aire River over the weekend where he caught several bream to 34 cm using garden worms for bait.
Fishing the Curdies at Peterborough, John Mackintosh took several bream in the vicinity of the Lodge using shrimp for bait.
Fishing Lake Bullen Merri on Thursday evening Andrew Popa’s catch included three brown trout, the biggest greeting the scales for a verdict of 2.8 kg, all taken trolling Lofty’s Cobra lures.
Fishing Lake Purrumbete with soft plastic lures on Sunday, Bill Richardson caught four brown trout to 1.5 kg around the edges of the weed beds in the area known as Rainbow Bay.
Fishing competition
Beginning tomorrow evening (Friday November 2nd) from 6.00 pm at the St Leonards boat ramp, the St Leonards and Bellarine Pirates Angling Clubs will jointly host a fishing competition which finishes at 3.00 pm Saturday. Fish may be weighed in at the boat ramp from 10.00 am Saturday.

My partner and I fish land based hoping for a snapper, but so far no luck. Any suggestions?
Sarah, percentagewise the chance of catching a good size snapper land based is not great. However, your chances improve by fishing either during or immediately after an onshore blow strong enough to discolour the water, or from an hour or so before first light until an hour or so after sunrise.
