Tackle Time still going strong after 50 years
CorrespondentPublished July 2, 2012TEXAS CITY — The Tackle Time fishing tournament has barely begun and it is already exceeding expectations.
“We’ve had over 300 people sign up and we expect that number to increase over the course of the tournament,” said Shawn Doyle, who is heading up this year’s event for the Texas City-La Marque Jaycees.
Normally, Tackle Time has 200 to 250 entrants, Doyle said.
The tournament started Friday and runs through Sunday. This year’s edition marks the event’s golden anniversary.
“This is a huge year for us,” Doyle said. “Fifty years for a fishing tournament is incredible, but it is something the community thrives on.”
For most of its run, Tackle Time has been held at the Texas City Dike. But, the tournament moved to Rainbow Park for a couple of years after Hurricane Ike damaged the dike. This year’s event is the second back at its old home.
“Everybody is excited to be back here again,” Doyle said.
Though there have been some down years over the life of the tournament, Doyle said there has never been a notion to not hold Tackle Time.
“Nobody has ever had that thought,” he said. “We have such a great group of (Jaycees) members and sponsors that we’ve always wanted to have Tackle Time.”
Even though the weather has not cooperated for the tournament’s opening weekend, the fishing has been quite good. Gerald Walton pulled in a 570-pound tiger shark Sunday.
“Any time you pull something in that big, it’s pretty crazy,” Doyle said.
The outlook for the rest of the tournament looks promising, he said.
“The weather is supposed to clear up and it looks real nice for the rest of the week,” Doyle said. “That ought to help us out.”
