Our Towns – April 25, 2012 - 5:00am
As a tournament bass fisherman, Irondequoit’s Ron Penders has fished all across New York state in pursuit of the “big one.”
But if he had to pick one place to hook a kid on fishing, it would be Honeoye Lake just south of Rochester.
“There are tons of 13- to 14-inch fish in Honeoye Lake, and you can use a lot of different techniques,” Penders, a member of the Rochester Bassmasters club. “In order to get kids interested in fishing, you have to catch fish. … So even if the fish are small, at least you’re still catching and still active.”
Thanks to an abundance of year-round fishing and hunting options, the Rochester region is a perfect place for outdoorsmen to stay active.
Just north of downtown is Lake Ontario, the world’s 14th-largest lake renowned for its trophy-class Chinook, Coho and Atlantic salmon. Fishing for steelhead, brown and lake trout is also on par with some of the world’s best sport fishing centers.
A fleet of experienced charter guides, many working out of the Port of Rochester, take customers out daily from April through September, with the waters off Niagara, Orleans, Monroe and Wayne counties taking turns as “hot spots” for salmon that migrate in search of bait fish.
The 11 Finger Lakes comprise 134,000 acres of fresh water holding trophy-sized trout, bass, walleye and pike.
Meanwhile, some of the best trout streams in the Northeast are located here, headed by Naples and Oatka creeks. The state stocks 2.4 million brook, brown and rainbow trout into more than 300 lakes and ponds and 3,000 miles of streams. Even the historic Erie Canal holds abundant pan fish.
Rochester is just as much a paradise for hunters. Regulated seasons exist not only for whitetail deer, but also for black bear, wild turkey, waterfowl and small-game species.
Some of the best counties to deer hunt are in western New York, including Steuben, Yates and Ontario counties, and bear hunting zones have been expanded to help curtail a growing population.
The Department of Environmental Conservation, whose local headquarters is located in Avon, Livingston County, is responsible for management of all fish and wildlife.
Even though most hunting is done on private property, hunters have access to nearly a quarter-million acres of public land, according to the Finger Lakes Tourism Alliance.
Anyone 16 and older needs a license to fish. Licenses are available at all town halls and bait shops.
Hunting in New York requires a license obtained after taking a comprehensive safety course offered by the DEC. There are special courses for archery hunters and trappers.
For all state hunting and fishing regulations, tips, and maps, contact the DEC at (585) 226-2466 or go to dec.ny.gov.
To locate a Lake Ontario charter boat service, contact the Genesee Charter Boat Association at geneseecharterboat.com or nyfisherman.net.

BEAR HUNTING BOOM
Bear hunting continues to gain popularity thanks to a growing population in western/central New York. Improved habitat over the past 15 years has allowed bears to expand their range from the Pennsylvania border north. Last season, hunters harvested a record 353 bears locally; the old record was 193 in 2008.

Fly fishing
Opportunity knocks for good early fly fishing UK Fishing News
With record high March temperatures, unprecedented early hatches of mayflies and caddis appeared on numerous local trout waters, affording memorable fly fishing opportunities. Little snowmelt and minimal rains have provided easy wading in many streams, but low conditions now might lead to a shortened season. Fish early and hard.Jim Bender’s Lower Forty becomes the nerve center for many local fly fishermen this time of year. He has received incredibly early reports of Quill Gordon and Hendrickson hatches.
Al Grudzinskas and Dan Kirsch have had excellent drift fishing with Tom Harrison on the Deerfield River in the lower stretch running into Greenfield, landing numerous trout up to 18 inches. Harrison offers quality western-style float trips down the Deerfield, catching and releasing impressive numbers of fish.
One of our region’s most accomplished fly fishermen, Dennis Alakoski, reports “epic” blue-winged olive hatches on the special regulations section of Connecticut’s Farmington River. According to Bender, size 18-20 emerger and adult imitations are the key to successfully fishing this prolific and sometimes enigmatic hatch.
Quincy back to flourishing
Get ready for winter flounder in Quincy Bay. A decade ago, that famous fishery was nearly dead because of pollution. Cleanup efforts are working. The flounder are back, feisty and flourishing. Clam and seaworm rigs will be bringing home limits of this gourmet treat any time now.Things are warming up
Warm-water fish are beginning to hit well. Jerry’s Bait & Tackle in Milford weighed in a 2-pound 10-ounce calico bass, caught by Craig Mason on a Slug-Go at Lake Chauncy. Jerry considers Brookfield’s South Pond and Fall River’s South Watuppa Pond two of the best calico waters in the state. Equally impressive was Steve Benoit’s 6-1/2-pound Quaboag Pond largemouth.Cleaning-up effort
Trout Unlimited will have representatives from the Blackstone River Coalition and the Blackstone River Watershed Association reporting on restoration efforts, Thursday evening at Worcester’s Broad Meadow Brook Sanctuary. TU admirably works to improve the streams they fish. At 9 a.m. Saturday, April 21, they’ll be leading a Quinapoxet River cleanup — followed by fishing, of course. Bring your work boots, gloves, and fishing gear, to help them.Salmon stocking help needed
MassWildlife is seeking volunteers to assist personnel in stocking 750,000 salmon fry for the Connecticut River Atlantic Salmon Restoration Program. Dr. Caleb Slater, anadromous fish project leader, advises that stocking runs through early May. Dozens of Connecticut River tributaries need stocking. Volunteers, needing to be in good condition, will carry buckets filled with tiny salmon down to the shorelines often via steep stream banks. Since it’s not unusual to get wet, volunteers should bring along a change of clothing. The fry stocking schedule and meeting locations can be found at www.mass.gov/dfwele/dfw. To join the effort, call Slater at (508) 389-6331. The challenge to bring this great fish back to its former grand stature here is daunting. Undoing the travesties of dams, pollution and the genetic extinction of the original Connecticut River strain is compounded by a hungry resident population of striped bass awaiting the little fish when they grow big enough to swim down to the sea. Saving this great fish would be one of our true restoration miracles.
Opportunity to donate
Consider helping our state’s endangered wildlife by supporting the Natural Heritage and Endangered Species Fund when you file your state income tax. Massachusetts tax form 1, line 32a, “Endangered Wildlife Conservation” allows us to make a valuable contribution. Considering recent hard times, it’s gratifying to know that about $200,000 per year has been so donated by many generous state residents concerned with wildlife.Buzzing about bees
I watched a lone bumblebee yesterday pollinating my peach tree. There just aren’t a lot of local bees anymore. Fortunately, about 1,700 beekeepers maintain over 11,000 hives in Massachusetts, trying to make up for that deficiency, vastly improving the productivity of our farms and gardens. They also offer beekeeping classes, recruiting more beekeepers to help the cause. About 200 species of trees, fruits, herbs, vegetables, and flowers depend on them. They deserve our support.Non-beekeepers can urge legislators to provide funding for additional bee inspectors to guard against foreign infestations, track disease outbreaks, prevent their spread and insure responsible management among Massachusetts beekeepers.
We can further help by reducing all pesticide, fungicide and herbicide use, and encouraging the growth of wild flowers and weeds, which constitute essential bee forage.
Wannabe beekeepers should contact the Worcester County Beekeepers at worcestercountybeekeepers.com or the Massachusetts Beekeepers at www.massbee.org.

Poynton cleans up with early season bag of carp to 100lb | This is South Devon UK Fishing
A bag of carp weighing more than 100lb is certainly unusual this early in the season but it was achieved at Crediton's Creedy Manor by Carl Poynton, of North Tawton.
He fished a swim three-quarters up the right-hand bank into mid-water depths and the two heaviest of the six commons banked weighed 23lb 3oz and 21lb 14oz and the remainder were all mid to upper doubles.
Mark Whitehead had the assistance of a live launce in the capture of his 16lb pollack taken at the Eddystone Reef from Malcolm Jones' Sea Angler II
Lesley Bush proved the worth of lady anglers by taking commons of 20lb and 18lb and much to the delight of her partner Vic Andrews who also had a very good day's sport during which he brought in four double-figure commons the heaviest 17lb 7oz and the next day had a mirror of 14lb 6oz.
Exeter junior Slade Stevens concentrated on tench and came up with a fish of 3lb.
It was a superb week of carp and cat activity at Emperor Lakes, at Loddiswell in South Devon, most certainly for Marcus Scott whose day job is bailiff at South West Lakes Trust Squabmoor Reservoir, near Sidmouth. He had two superb mirror carp of 40lb 2oz and 36lb 10oz, the former out for the second time at a much increased weight that says much for the development of the fishery by Dave and Joanna Lidstone since they took over the ever-expanding complex.
A common carp of 33lb 6oz was banked by Mark Owen, and Caroline Rogers continued her success story with a beautiful Linear mirror of 30lb 5oz. A fully plated mirror carp of 25lb 12oz was banked by Pete Newmarch and a 24 lb 8oz fish fell to Malcolm Best.
On the day ticket lake a catfish of 41lb fell to Dave Wood and a 21½lb example came to Mark Wood's bait. By no means did every offer come to fruition.
At Halwill's Anglers Paradise, TV celebrity Will Mellor was happy to pose for pictures and sign autographs for fans in the local village after a carp initiation on the beginners' lake.
The opening days of the trout season at Bristol Water Reservoirs were action filled. Blagdon yielded 2,340 fish and the rod average was a high 6.2. Chew Valley produced 1,162 rainbows and here the rod average was 6.8. Only barrows 1 and 2 are available for fishing this year and the catch figure was 1161 for a 3.9 average.
The water is very clear in all lakes but levels are much lower than what is normal at this time of the year.
One of the most successful methods has proved to be slow sinking lines carrying small bright boobys. Hatches of black buzzers have been prolific and the fish are also feeding well on masses of insect life at all the venues.
The Cornish reefs are fishing very well for pollack, the action due to the considerable number of launce now in residence. A number of fish to 16lb a very good weight this early in the season, were taken by Dave and Julie Oxenham and Mark Whitehead fishing from Malcolm Jones' Sea Angler II that was set up to drift the Eddystone's "gully" and the south reef.
Brixham Sea Angling Club holds its annual presentation evening this coming Saturday at its Caster Road headquarters. Club members had many good fish during the past year and this is reflected in the number of Angling Trust specimen fish certificates that were won.
