Scotland launches shark protection order
CHANGES introduced by the Scottish Government today should help to ensure that vulnerable species of sharks, skates and rays are now protected over and above EU legislation.
The Scottish Government is the first in Europe to introduce legislation protecting such a wide range of species. The Sharks Skates and Rays (Prohibition of Fishing) Order came into force today and covers 26 species – including angel sharks, tope, common skate and undulate rays.
The legislation extends current protection measures with a landing ban for recreational anglers, as well as prohibiting commercial fishermen from catching vulnerable tope.
Fisheries Secretary Richard Lochhead said: “Sharks, skates and rays form an important part of Scotland’s rich marine biodiversity. Some of these species are critically endangered and this legislation will mean that we have gone above and beyond EU legislation to offer greater levels of protection.
“With a landing ban across both commercial and recreational fisheries, we can help support stock recovery for vulnerable shark, skate and ray species. This legislation builds on Scotland’s leading protection measures for sharks – including our proactive decision in 2009 to strengthen the ban on barbaric shark finning.
“Recreational anglers will still be permitted to fish using the 'catch and release' method, while the tagging programmes undertaken by anglers can continue. This important initiative is providing invaluable data about sharks in Scottish waters and will help inform policies about how best we can protect these stocks in the future.”
Ali Hood, Director of Conservation for the Shark Trust, said: “A legacy of unregulated fisheries worldwide has heavily impacted on a number of populations, with certain species found in Scottish waters now critically depleted. Adoption of the Scottish Elasmobranch Protection Order is extremely proactive, complementing existing fisheries management and consequently aiding the recovery of these endangered species. The Shark Trust will now look to the rest of the UK to follow Scotland’s example.”
Ian Burrett, the Scottish Sea Angling Conservation Network's (SSACN’s) Project Director said: "Now that tope has joined common skate and porbeagle in being given the highest levels of protection in Scottish waters, SSACN would like to see the EU extend that protection in all European waters.
“Sea angling attracts over 110,000 participants and contributes around £150 million each year to the economy. Without the efforts of all involved any other management solutions could have had serious implications for our sport and all those businesses and coastal economies reliant on it."
Mike Park, Chairman of the Scottish White Fish Producers Association, said: "It is right that we take all steps possible to protect vulnerable species and groups of species. Bringing recreational sea angling into line with restrictions currently imposed on commercial fishers makes a great deal of sense."

Tattershall Farm Park and fishing lakes go on sale for £1.4m | This is Lincolnshire
A £1.4 million holiday business has been put up for sale.
Tattershall Farm Park and Moon Lakes Fishery is on the market despite anticipating an 80 per cent turnover increase in the current financial year.
Tattershall Farm Park and Mook Lakes Fishery is on sale for £1.4m
The property includes six coarse fishing lakes, a farm park with cafeteria, a gift shop, play barns and animal viewing pens.
A four-to-five bedroom farmhouse, which is set among trees and has waterside views, is also included.
The business is located close to the historic village of Tattershall, which lies 23 miles south of Lincoln.
Agents Fenn Wright say a significant growth in the farm park turnover is responsible for the expected rise in takings.
Partner Martin Freeman said the predicted turnover was "remarkable."
"The farm park caters for a wide age range and is open every day except Christmas and Boxing Day, allowing for both indoor and outdoor play, so it is not reliant on good weather," he said.
"The trend for taking holidays closer to home would seem to be benefiting the business considerably, with projected figures up to April anticipating a remarkable upturn."
The fishery is said to well established in the area with a good reputation for both pleasure and competitive angling.
Its six lakes range in size from around 0.8 of an acre to around 1.9 acres.
All watercourses are claimed to be well stocked with coarse fish.
There are also fishing and grazing rights on seven acres of land adjoining the River Witham.
A match record of 142lbs of carp has been recorded from one of the small lakes, known as The Meadow.
Large car parks are situated close to the lakes and the cafeteria.

Armed Forces Day June 30 2012 Scunthorpe UK.
Scunthorpe to host Armed Forces Day
A range of fundraising activities are being organised in Scunthorpe for the third annual Armed Forces Day.
Taking place on June 30th, a series of events have been planned for the Messingham Grange Recreation and Showground, the Scunthorpe Telegraph reports.
A father and son are completing a sponsored walk of the Yorkshire Wolds National Trail to collect cash for various military charities.
Tony and Wayne Murphy will cover a distance of 79 miles with 30kg bags on their backs.
"I have done a lot of long distance walking before and we needed funds for the day so I decided to organise a trek," Tony Murphy stated.
He continued by saying that 30,000 people living in Scunthorpe have connections with the armed forces and so the event is always well supported.
On the day itself, individuals can expect to see military displays and entertainment, while a pie and peas supper will be laid on.
