Outdoors: Miller Time's three Sunday sailfish lift team to Sailfish Point win » TCPalm.com
SAILFISH POINT — As it pulled into the marina, the winning team of the Sailfish Point Yacht Club Invitational Sailfish Tournament celebrated in style with "red and white smoothies."
It may have been a small irony that the crew of Miller Time chose to celebrate its successful Sunday with a few ice cold Budweisers. But it was no irony that they pulled out the win after catching and releasing three sailfish on the day, including two on trolled ballyhoo.
Miller Time finished the event with five sailfish releases, four on dead bait, for 900 total points. Runner-up 2 Dream 4 wound up with more sailfish — seven — but all were on live bait for 700 points. The tournament awarded 200 points for sailfish caught on dead bait and 100 for those caught on live bait since there is generally more angling skill required when fishing for sails with dead bait.
A fleet of 11 teams fished the 30th annual event that enabled teams to fish two of three days. Four teams fished Sunday combining for eight sailfish catches giving the event a combined total catch of just 25 sailfish. Six of Sunday's fish were caught on live bait and two on dead bait.
Trailing tournament leader 2 Dream 4 by 300 points when Sunday's fishing began, Miller Time owners Rob and Patti Miller of Palm City, teammate angler Brian Schwan, Capt. Brandon Walton, and crewmen Jason Peer and J.J. Davidson knew they could pull ahead if they could convince two sailfish to take two trolled ballyhoo. Trouble was, the sailfish bite hasn't exactly been what it was two weeks ago when boats were enjoying 20 to 25 bites a day.
"We started out at the wrecks in 180 feet and caught a dolphin along a nice weed line, but didn't see any sailfish," said Miller, who owns the Jarrett Bay 42 Express. "We moved inshore to the Rankin where Brian had the first sail (at 9:55 a.m.). But when he hooked up, we got swarmed by all the other boats that were in there and had to move."
Heavy boat traffic on a Sunday with nice weather proved to be one of the team's biggest obstacles, Walton said. After moving to 50 feet at the Junk Hole, Schwan hooked the team's second and lead-taking fish, however, they nearly lost it on two boats nearby that seemingly failed to yield despite their requests.
"The fish came up jumping near an FWC patrol boat that finally saw how close we were and moved," Walton said. "But a couple on a cruising boat nearby watched without moving at all despite not being at anchor as we nearly backed into them trying to get our release."
Miller Time did get the fish at 10:58 a.m. and took the lead on 2 Dream 4, which was idle Sunday. Since teams fished two of the event's three days, Capt. John Simes and anglers Frank Taube and Mike Hennings had built the team's lead by winning the daily awards Friday and Saturday.
Sunday, Christina led by Capt. Dave Chasmar with anglers Don Campgna, John Adamiak and Ted Blount also had three sailfish, all caught on live bait. Idall Time with Capt. Cooper Brandt and anglers David Dall, Ed Dawson and Joe Eaton caught two sails on live bait.
After catching the go-ahead sailfish, Miller Time decided to shift gears and try to catch their first fish of the tournament on live bait. It took a while, but finally at 1:54 p.m. a sail hit a live blue runner there at the Junk Hole which was reeled in by Patti Miller.
Although it seemed like just an add-on to the great weekend, it wound up winning the Top Lady Angler Award for her. Schwan caught six sailfish to win the Top Angler Award. Johnny Stukel, 15, of Se Bueno was named the Top Junior Angler catching two sailfish.
With 400 points, third place boat went to Se Bueno with Capt. Boogie Warren, Stukel and angler Joe Oliveiros. Dennis Longstreet aboard Challenge weighed the heaviest dolphin at 12.02 pounds.
For the Millers, it was a perfect finish to their first sailfish tournament season on the Treasure Coast. The team held its own against the area's top competition through all five of the area's tournaments.
"We have a great team and had a great season this year," said Patti Miller. "We met a lot of new friends and captains. It's a nice community to be in. Fishing people are good people."

It's tournament time at Lake Okeechobee » TCPalm.com
OKEECHOBEE — Brandon Medlock and Dan Blanchard can tell any bass angler that Lake Okeechobee is fishing about as good as a body of water can.
Over the weekend, Medlock won the FLW Outdoors EverStart Series Southeast Division season-opening event and its $35,000 paycheck with a 15-pound, 3-ounce bag limit Saturday. In three days, Medlock of Lake Placid bagged 68 pounds, 2 ounces for a whopping 4.5 pound per fish average. That was aided by the tournament's largest catch, a 10-pound, 8-ouncer on Friday that earned an additional $300.
Blanchard of Sarasota won the FLW Bass Fishing League Gator Division opener Jan. 14 bagging a 30-pound, 6-ounce limit or 6.1-pound average for $6,000.
That's great news as two of bass fishing's biggest events along with other key events for up and coming bassers are set to fish on Florida's largest lake in the next eight weeks.
The Wal-Mart FLW Tour will field close to 200 anglers Feb. 9-12 with $100,000 top prize on the line for boaters and $20,000 top prize for the top co-angler. Roland Martin's Marina in Clewiston will serve as the take-off location each morning. Weigh-ins will take place at the marina on the first two days before shifting over to the Clewiston Wal-Mart for the final two days. The complete schedule, entry deadlines and more information is available at www.flwoutdoors.com.
March 22-25, the Bassmaster Elite Series and its top-drawing names will fish the Power Pole Slam out of Scott Driver Park west of Okeechobee. Visit www.bassmaster.com for details.
The FLW's BFL Gator Division returns to the lake Feb. 18. The BASS Federation Southern Divisional will fish out of Clewiston March 28-30.
Expect to hear about record catches as was seen last year during the FLW Tour Okeechobee stop when Brandon McMillan crushed the tournament organization's all-time catch totals with 106 pounds in four days of fishing. Runner-up Randall Tharp (102 pounds) and third place Chad Prough (100) also topped the century mark which rattled the bass world.
Speaking of McMillan, he finished ninth Saturday despite being reluctant to fish only three weeks after his father's senseless murder at the family-owned store in Belle Glade. McMillan said his family urged him to compete to honor his father's memory. Jimmy McMillan had also posted FLW victories on Lake Okeechobee winning the FLW Series event there in 2009. Saturday's top two Treasure Coast finishers were co-anglers Kevin Spooner of Vero Beach with 26-pounds, 7-ounces for 12 bass to place third and earn $4,000, and Ron Buck of Port St. Lucie who finished ninth with 11 bass weighing 18 pounds, 9 ounces for $1,000.

Free fishing weekend set for next month
Posted: Jan 24, 2012 11:10 AM Tuesday, January 24, 2012 6:10 AM EST Updated: Jan 24, 2012 12:31 PM Tuesday, January 24, 2012 7:31 AM ESTSAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -The annual Winter Free Fishing Weekend is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 18 and Sunday, Feb. 19 across Michigan.
On that weekend, everyone - residents and non-residents alike - can fish without a license, though all other fishing regulations still apply.
Michigan has been celebrating Winter Free Fishing Weekend annually since 1994 as a way to promote awareness of the state's vast aquatic resources. With more than 3,000 miles of Great Lakes shoreline, 36,000 miles of rivers and 11,000 inland lakes, Michigan and fishing are a natural match.
"Michigan offers some of the finest freshwater fishing in the world, including during the winter months," DNR Director Rodney Stokes said. "Fishing is an inexpensive activity anyone can pursue as an individual or as a family. We encourage you to get out this February and experience it for yourself, for free."
To encourage involvement in Free Fishing Weekends, organized activities are being scheduled in communities across the state. These activities are coordinated by a variety of organizations including: constituent groups, schools, local and state parks, businesses and others.
There's still plenty of time to plan your own local Free Fishing Weekend event, or find one occurring in your community. Visit the newly revamped website www.michigan.gov/freefishing for all things related to this unique weekend; including where you can find help on event planning and promotion and where you can identify events in your area or register an official event.

The sailfish are biting, and a nationally televised fishing tournament is coming to town.
Palm Beach County next week hosts the Sailfish Open, the first time the four-year-old tournament will be held outside of Duck Key.
The county is known for good sailfishing, tournament spokeswoman Sheri Richards said.
Televised on NBC, the Sailfish Open is expected to draw more than 30 teams fishing for prize money and contributions to charity. Last year, it awarded $250,000.
The tournament will take place Feb.1-3 at several marinas. Get more information at http://www.sailfishopen.com.

Pure Fishing Resort du Der Promo | Eddy Norder Carp Fishing catch
Pure Fishing Resort du Der Promo
In 2011 i was able to fish on Pure Fishing Resort 3 times. In June i have been fishing on JRC Lake, in September on Berkley Lake and in October on Penn Lake. All three times it were weekend sessions of approximately 60 hours a session. During all sessions i was accompanied by one or several friends. Allthough it were short sessions, we have been able to get a lot of fish on the bank. I estimate that the Pure Fishing Resort will be a huge attraction for Carp Anglers in the future.
With this video i want to share some pictures and catches with all of you. Allthough the resort is still not finished yet it is allready a pleasure fishing over there. So enjoy the video and if you have some questions dont hesitate to contact me or go and visit www.carpconnections.nl
In one of the next editions of ‘Karper Magazine’ there will be a article published from me which contains lots of information about the Pure Fishing Resort! So if you are interested don’t miss it!

The Alabama Rig is changing bass fishing
The Alabama Rig has created a frenzy in the tackle industry that Billy Moore hasn't seen in 20 years.

Sponsored by the Oklahoma City Boat Dealers Association, the four-day...“It's amazing,” said Moore, the manager of Lucky Lure Tackle in Oklahoma City. “This bait is as big as the Sluggo was. You can't believe how many people are going to Arbuckle and catching fish on it.”
When pro angler Paul Elias won an FLW bass tournament in October by catching more than 100 pounds of fish on the Alabama Rig, it became the bait that everyone wanted.
Since then, other manufacturers have raced to get their own version of the Alabama Rig on store shelves. Bass fishermen across the country are making homemade versions of it in their garages.
“Since the first of the year there have been multiple manufacturers come out with a version of the rig,” said David Hughes, owner of Lucky Lure Tackle. “Everyone has got one. We are selling them as fast as we can get them in.”
Before all of the copycats started appearing, anglers with original Alabama rigs were selling them for as much as $100 on eBay.
The Alabama Rig is very similar to a small umbrella rig. Umbrella rigs have been used for years by Lake Texoma fishermen when trolling for striped bass.
An Alabama man took the design of the umbrella rig and scaled it down so it could be cast.
The Alabama Rigs are smaller and lighter and look like a baby's mobile that hangs above a crib. The rigs have a weighted head with five wire leaders attached for five baits.

Change your profile picture to protest SOPA!
On Wednesday, December 18th we came together against the overreaching proposals of SOPA & PIPA. Although there was no single centralized coordinating entity, there was one principle: freedom of the Internet. It’s important to recognize that this doesn’t mean all content should be free or that piracy is acceptable. People who create with words, pictures and sounds are just as valuable as those who create with code, and all deserve a system which protects both their creativity and their income. But SOPA & PIPA were not meant to be part of this system. They provided too many opportunities for abuse, inherently favored the status quo of big corporations and did not take into account all the changes in the landscape since the DMCA was passed.
By rejecting these bills - and that was absolutely the right thing to do - our community inherited two responsibilities. The first is to remain vigilant and active within politics – be conscious of how you vote, how you spend your money. The second is to work collaboratively with the creative ecosystem to balance rights and revenue. As technologists we cannot simply say “it’s just a platform” – we need to be thoughtful and accountable for how our tools are used.
#BlackoutSOPA doesn’t intend to be the place where you can accomplish either of these goals - instead we recommend you become active in the organizations listed below. At the same time though we’re not disappearing. You’ll be watching and so will we. We’ll keep the technology running so feel free to change your avatar whenever you want. And if needed, we’ll be back with new badges and a call to action.
Thank you for being part of something amazing. We look forward to the future.
