PLENTY TO SEE AT THE KENT ANGLING SHOW
Last weekend we organised a visit to The Kent Angling Show near Maidstone on Sunday and also sorted out a session for pike on Saturday. The show was great but the pike fishing was a little disappointing…
My new angling friend, Tom, arrived at my house at 8.00am. I squeezed my gear into the back of his car and off we went. You may have noticed that I called Tom my new ‘angling friend’. That is because I have two types of friend; normal friend, i.e. from college, a sport’s club or someone who lives nearby, or angling friend, a fishing buddy who I fish with. But no, my angling friends are more than just someone who can fish with me, they are who I discuss tactics with and come up with pre-baiting plans, share bait with, talk rigs with and more.
Tom and I arrived at the lower Sussex Ouse and fished a weirpool first. The fishing was very slow all through the day but we stayed strong and kept trying new spots with lures, spinners and deadbaits. In the end we decided to move to a stretch of the Uck in Uckfield. After a couple of hours watching my float drift around the weirpool, it bobbed and started sliding
away. I felt the weight of the fish. I swung my rod back, the fish shook its head and seconds later it had gone, taking my dead bait with it!
This was an encouraging start but the rest of the day continued to be tricky. We ended up heading home with a dry net. We both reckoned that the water was too coloured and that could be why it was so tough. However, you never know what’s going on beneath the surface, until now… (more on that later).
On Sunday morning we woke up early. Mum was going to visit relatives in Chatham and on her way would drop us off at the Kent Angling Show. Fantastic, that was sure to cheer me up after my big fat blank the day before!
On arriving at the show, our first impression was that it was a little smaller than we had expected. However, we soon realised that we were stood in just one of the three huge tents. First of all we walked around to see if we could spot some good deals or people that would be interesting to talk to. There were many tackle dealers with stands ranging from small to
absolutely huge! Alex and I particularly enjoyed visiting the individual tackle company stands where they display their best tackle at reasonable prices. Our favourite stands were probably the Bait-Zone (smelt incredible and had a huge range of prepared particles), the Barbel Society, who had the great Steve Pope with who we talked for ages about the current state of barbel fishing, the aims of the society and much more. We were also impressed by the Nash Tackle stand where they displayed all their latest releases such as the Scope Range, Peg One Rods and Nets and Kevin Nash’s book, Memoirs of a Carp Fisher.
We spent some time outside with Alfie Russell who helped me to cast a little further, improving my casting technique. I’ve never been one to do things the normal way but in this case Alfie’s casting tips helped me chuck the surface missile float over 100 yards. Lastly we had a good long talk with Paul Garner about our plans to do some more filming together and also about his newly released book, Underwater Angling, which we then bought and am about to read once I have finished writing this blog!
So to summarize, I decided to join The Barbel Society, realised what a gentleman Steve Pope is, bought Paul’s book, cast further, and decided that I want a couple of Scope Rods for Xmas!
Tight lines guys and girls.

Tarpon Fishing Florida Everglades Winter | Skiff Republic | Skiff Republic
Stig Nygaard photo
It’s been only weeks since the last of the baitfish populations pushed out of south Florida. With them went some fairly predictable fall tarpon fishing. But now we are only weeks away from the months when tarpon begin responding to warm, calm winter days by moving up into the rivers and basins of the Everglades and other sheltered inshore areas.
Some of the best tarpon fishing you can do happens in January, February and March in Florida. It’s not well-known or well-understood, but the winter fishery is something to behold if you get the timing right and know where to look. We’ll be publishing some tips on winter fishing over the next few months. Here’s one to start:
When looking for winter tarpon, think dark bottom and no wind. Dark bottom–be it the tannic sand of the Ten Thousand Islands basins or the long dark turtlegrass in water that is 10 feet deep or so in the Keys–holds heat. And the absence of wind brings tarpon closer to the surface; there are different theories for this, but my favorite has to do with the fact that wind (and cold) oxygenate water and enable a tarpon to stay deep without rolling.
So to begin your search for winter tarpon–assuming you don’t know the locations they’ve preferred historically–start by looking near deeper water or pockets in basins in about 10 feet of water. And look in on calm days with bright skies so that you can see fish that are sometimes laid up 8 feet below the surface. You may have a hard time getting the fly down to them without an intermediate line, but don’t worry–they’ll come up. And if the weather has been calm and hot for a few days, don’t be surprised to see some very big fish lollygagging right near the surface.

DNA testing gives enforcers the edge in battle against the salmon poachers | This is Cornwall
Salmon poaching is big business, given the high prices commanded by wild fish.
But telling a wild salmon from a farmed fish on the slab is not easy, allowing some cheaper farmed fish to be palmed off as their much more expensive netted wild cousins.
It is only when eating a wild salmon the superior quality of the wild fish becomes apparent.
But pioneering research at Exeter University means it should now be possible to distinguish between wild and farmed fish by examining their DNA – an important breakthrough for the Environment Agency who have to distinguish between the two types of fish.
Anyone catching a salmon at sea while fishing for other species must return it to the water unharmed. Failure to do so is an offence under the Salmon and Freshwater Fisheries Act. It is also an offence to sell a rod caught wild salmon. Fishmongers and restaurants should only purchase salmon caught by licensed netsmen. Each wild fish must be tagged so its origin can be traced and fish must not be caught outside the official salmon netting season.
Environment Agency fisheries enforcement officers believe wild salmon are being caught by fishermen targeting species such as bass. In effect, the salmon are a 'by-catch.' Instead of returning them to the sea, some unscrupulous people are keeping these salmon and selling them on.
The sale of wild salmon and sea trout is covered by stringent regulations. Wild fish fetch premium prices and anyone advertising a salmon as a wild fish is expected to be able to produce tags relating to each fish and details of its purchase upon request. Without this information, an illegally caught fish becomes just another salmon and cannot be sold as wild.
Now a single laboratory test can reveal whether a salmon is a farmed or wild fish.
"Most farmed salmon are from Norwegian stock and have a highly distinctive genetic fingerprint. The research at Exeter University shows there are clear differences in the DNA of salmon returning to UK rivers like the Exe and fish with a Norwegian genetic signature found at fish farms. By comparing samples against a data base of salmon from across Europe it is possible to tell whether a fish is a farmed or wild salmon," said Nick Maye for the Environment Agency.
"This is an exciting new development that should make enforcement of the Salmon and Freshwater Fisheries Act easier and help us protect salmon stocks around our coasts and estuaries. It has given us another string to our bow and should make anyone selling illegally caught salmon and sea trout think twice before trying to pass off an illegally caught wild salmon as a farmed fish," he added.
The Environment Agency will be stepping up its checks on local retail outlets to ensure they keep within the law. "We can turn up unannounced at shops and restaurants, ask for details of any fish advertised for sale and, if necessary, take samples for subsequent genetic analysis. Test purchases will also be made anonymously from wet fish premises and samples analysed at Exeter University. Our message to anyone thinking of trading in illegally caught wild salmon is 'It is not worth the risk' because we now have the technology to catch and prosecute you," said Mr Maye.

New brook trout fishing regulations for Upper Peninsula - WNEM TV 5
LANSING, MI (WNEM) -The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has approved five stream segments in the Upper Peninsula for an increase in the daily possession limit for brook trout from five to 10 fish.
The rule becomes effective April 1, 2013.The DNR says this limited experimental regulation is in response to requests from anglers to increase the daily possession limit on brook trout across the Upper Peninsula.
For selected stream segments, the daily possession limit for brook trout would be 10 fish and the minimum size limit would be 7 inches. Streams were selected from existing Type 1 streams which have a daily possession limit of five fish and a 7-inch minimum size limit.
Stream segments and their tributaries include: Dead River (Marquette County), Driggs River (Schoolcraft County), East Branch Ontonagon River (Houghton and Iron counties), East Branch Tahquamenon River (Chippewa County) and East Branch Huron River (Baraga and Marquette counties).
In October the DNR proposed a new Type 5 stream category at the Natural Resources Commission meeting, with 10 streams to be included. Angler input resulted in a reduction of the number of streams proposed from 10 down to five and the removal of the Type 5 category, substituting instead the experimental regulations category. In addition, the DNR has committed to evaluations that will begin next year.
Streams selected for this regulation will constitute 3 percent of the current Type 1 stream mileage available in the Upper Peninsula.
During the next several years, Fisheries Division will work with a variety of partners to assess the biological effects of the possession limit increase on the brook trout populations in the experimental regulations category streams.
The stream segments are not accessible to brook trout from the Great Lakes. In recent years, rehabilitation of lake-run brook trout populations has attracted considerable interest among resource agencies, conservation groups and anglers, and a variety of measures have been taken to protect these populations.
These "coaster" brook trout are a life history variant and are not a genetically distinct strain or sub-species. The DNR has also proposed future work in this area of brook trout management.
Maps and written descriptions of the upstream (where applicable) and downstream boundaries for the experimental trout regulations are available at www.michigan.gov/fishing.>
