Point Pleasant (WV) Register - Bend Area catfish tournament kicks off this weekend
MASON — Fishing fanatics from all over will be gathering in Mason this weekend for the 22nd Annual Bend Area C.A.R.E. (Community Assistance and Relief for Everyone)/Budweiser Catfish Tournament.
Beginning at 7 a.m. on Saturday, June 2, at the Mason Levee, those wishing to participate must be registered by 6:15 a.m. on the morning of the tournament. Weigh-in is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the levee, with the awards ceremony following. There will be over $4,000 in prize money awarded, and participants must register in two person teams. There will also be several other family activities throughout the day.
As with any official tournament, there are a set of rules to follow. This tournament includes the following rules and regulations.
- The committee can only accept entries that list a two-member team (only exception are kids 10 years and under or adults 70 and over may accompany the two-person team, in those cases, three people would be allowed in the boat). There is no age limit on participants, all ages are welcome. Each participant is required to have a valid fishing license.
- The tournament will be limited to those applications received and recorded by the deadline, June 2, 2012, at 6:15 a.m. Even if pre-registered, all teams must register in person with tournament staff the morning of the tournament by 6:30 a.m.
- Team members will fish from the same boat, there will be no bank fishing permitted. There will be only one team per boat. It will be prohibited for any boat to give or offer fish to any other boat. It is also prohibited for any boat to accept fish not actually caught by them during the tournament, or to suggest to another boat they offer their fish as a gift. Any infraction of this rule will disqualify all teams involved from this and all future tournaments sponsored by Bend Area C.A.R.E.
- All fish must be caught on rod and reel only. Any legal catfish bait will be permitted.
- We have the right to check all livewells prior to starting the tournament. Boats must be a minimum of 12 feet in length. Safe boating must be observed at all times. All boats and motors must meet required United States Coast Guard standards. Each contestant must wear an approved life preserver during the tournament take-off. We recommend that life preservers be worn any time the motor is running. All boats must be operated in a safe and courteous manner at all times.
- No trailering of boats from one fishing location to another will be permitted. You may launch your boat at another ramp. However, all boats must start from the water at the Mason Levee. Locking through will be permitted.
- Fishing hours will be Saturday 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Contestants will be permitted to fish only during tournament hours. The tournament will start at 7 a.m. sharp. Any team not at the levee by 7 a.m. will be disqualified. (There may be some exceptions to this rule.)
- All scoring will be determined by weight. There will be a five-fish limit with an 24-inch minimum length for each team. All fish must be alive; dead fish will not be weighed. There will be an eight-ounce penalty for each fish brought to the scales under the 24-inch minimum. Money will be paid for first through tenth place for the most weight of a team’s total number of fish. The Big Cat Money will be awarded to the team with the single heaviest catfish. All types of catfish will be scored.
- Upon closing of the scales, the leaders of the most weight and the Big Cat will undergo a mandatory polygraph test. Upon successfully passing the polygraph, the teams will be declared the winners. Other winners may be subjected to the polygraph at the discretion of the Tournament Rules Committee.
- Teams who fail to appear at the official check-in site on time (4 p.m. sharp) will be penalized one pound per five minutes up to fifteen minutes. After fifteen minutes (4:15 p.m.), the team will be disqualified. Boat and motor problems will not be a valid excuse.
- All valid protests will be heard and considered by the Rules Committee. Any team wishing to lodge a protest against the score of another team must do so in writing, and it must be signed by the protester within 30 minutes following the day’s official check-in time.
- In case of a tie for any of the positions, the winner will be the team that had the heaviest fish. If this does not resolve the tie, we will then go to the flip of a coin.
- Sportsmanship will be paramount at all times. Consideration at all times for the rights of other teams must be displayed by everyone. Courtesy is the word for this and all tournaments sponsored by the Bend Area C.A.R.E.
- For the safety of all involved, Bend Area C.A.R.E. will only accept 125 boats in the tournament.
It was reported that teams travel to this tournament from all over, including fishermen and women from West Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, Michigan, Illinois and the Carolinas. In addition to becoming one of the most popular catfish tournaments in the Eastern United States, the proceeds from this tournament will go towards local families in need during the Christmas season.
The Bend Area C.A.R.E. organization works to help families and individuals in need in Mason County, and the proceeds from this tournament will benefit the Kids for Christmas Program. It was reported this fishing tournament normally raises around 70-80 percent of the total money used in the Kid for Christmas Program, and the Bend Area C.A.R.E. organization was able to spend over $14,000 last year to help out over 20 families, which included around 100 children.
The local Budweiser distributor, Proud Eagle Distributing, is the primary sponsor of this year’s event.
For more information on tournament rules, entrance fees, and registration, contact Elvis Zerkle at 304-593-1337.
Fishing Forecast: Week of May 31 - June 6 | HamptonRoads.com
By Lee Tolliver
The Virginian-Pilot
© May 31, 2012While flounder action has been outstanding in Eastern Shore barrier-island backwaters for several weeks, it's about time for quality fishing to crank up inside the lower Chesapeake Bay.
Anglers have been boating more and more fish topping 5 pounds along the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. Big flatties also are being found along channel edges and rubble piles inside the Bay. Artificial reefs and wrecks throughout the Bay and along the coast are other places to look for summer flounder.
This species has long been a favorite with local anglers and visitors. The spring fishery along the southern Eastern Shore is a huge boon to the area's tourism industry.
In fact, the flounder is rivaled only by the striped bass when it comes to recreational angling economic impact in Virginia.
Anglers spend millions of dollars each year targeting flatfish.
And with good reason.
Flounder usually are abundant and eager to participate. The species also is a powerful fighter, turning its flat body against the pressure and giving an angler a good game of tug-o-war.
And when it comes to table fare, who doesn't love a piece of grilled or fried flounder? Or better yet, a filet stuffed with Chesapeake Bay crabmeat doused with butter and Old Bay, then cooked under the broiler.
When it comes to flounder, it doesn't get any better than that.
And southeastern Virginia provides plenty of opportunity.
Action could be slow for a few days because of muddy water caused by runoff from recent heavy rains. But once waters clear, catches could be outstanding.
FORECAST
Hampton Roads
If weather patterns would ever stabilize, fishing opportunities will be outstanding on just about all fronts as more species migrate into local waters.
Striped bass along the CBBT and the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel have been the most consistent of all species currently available. Make sure to check state regulations on limits.
Red-drum numbers have been good, especially around shoals near the mouth of the Bay. Don't hesitate to work coastal waters for fish moving north. There, anglers also are liable to find some of the first cobia. A few fish have moved into the Bay, but the best is yet to come.
Anglers working the CBBT for flounder and red drum also have encountered the season's first sheepshead. Again, things are just getting started.
Commercial netters have encountered a few spadefish, and spearfishermen have confirmed their arrival. Waters still are too cold for rod and reel action, however.
Look for good numbers of croaker around the mouths of rivers leading into the Bay. And some small spot have been caught along Ocean View and from the first island of the CBBT.
The inlets are holding croaker, small spot, flounder, bluefish and a few speckled trout.
Amberjack have started to show around some offshore structures, especially locations like the Navy towers.
Bluewater action is on the rise, with more yellowfin tuna, dolphin, wahoo and billfish showing along warm water eddies near the Norfolk Canyon. Bottom-bouncers also can find plenty of tilefish, grouper and sea bass.
Eastern Shore
Red drum and flounder continue to provide the best opportunities.
Flounder are hitting in most barrier island backwaters, with some of the best catches coming from around Wachapreague and Oyster. Some speckled trout and croaker could be caught around Oyster.
Red drum numbers are outstanding along the breakers of southern barrier islands, especially around Smith and Fisherman's islands.
Anglers also have been catching flounder and some sea mullet from around the Concrete Ships at Kiptopeke.
Black drum are running along the channel from the CBBT to Cape Charles, but catches have been slow.
Outer Banks
The highlight along the islands has been the inshore run of big cobia. Sightcasters have been enjoying outstanding action. Anglers also continue to encounter schools of red drum.
Bluefish, Spanish mackerel and shark also are available.
Bluewater trollers are finding a mixed bag of tuna, dolphin, wahoo and increasing numbers of billfish out of both inlets.
The inlets and sounds have been holding puppy drum, speckled trout, gray trout, small black drum, bluefish, sea mullet and flounder. A few sheepshead also have been caught.
Pier and surf
Lots of small stuff is showing along the beaches of both states.
In Virginia, it's been croaker, bluefish, flounder, sea mullet and a few spot. Along the Oceanfront, some big red drum and cobia are possible.
Added to the mix along the Outer Banks are pompano, blow toads, Spanish mackerel and shark. But most beaches are closed and just what will be open after the passing of Beryl is anybody's guess.
Freshwater
Tidal waters throughout Virginia and North Carolina likely are dangerous with debris from recent storms and heavy rain, so anglers working such waters should be cautious while underway.
Waters also are plenty muddy from the same runoff, so largemouth bass fishing could be tough for a few days while things clear up. In the meantime, use topwater baits, spinners with lots of flash and vibration or crankbaits to help fish find your offering.
Live bait is a good option in these conditions.
Bluegill and shellcracker are working the shallows more and more these days in preparation for spawning season. Size down your tackle or use flyrods for exciting action. But for bigger fish, especially shellcracker, employ bottom rigs with pieces of fresh shrimp or live worms.
Bass fishers also can expect increasing numbers of bowfin, a species not well-liked, but one that provides intense strikes and tough battles.

N Ireland Fishing Licence
The Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure (DCAL) and the Loughs Agency of the Foyle, Carlingford and Irish Lights Commission (FCILC) are conservation bodies responsible for protecting fish stocks in Northern Ireland.
Both bodies issue angling licences in their respective jurisdictions and, on payment of a supplement, licence holders are allowed to fish in the other jurisdiction. The above map marks out the FCILC area and the rest of the area in the map is the DCAL area.Difference between Game and Coarse fish
Licences and permits are also split into categories (Game or Coarse). Game species include brown trout, sea trout, salmon, and arctic char. Coarse species include pike, bream, roach, perch, carp, tench and rudd.Does a Great Britain (English,Scottish, Welsh) or the Republic of Ireland licence cover you in Northern Ireland?
Great Britain (English, Scottish, Welsh) or Republic of Ireland fishing licences do not cover angling in Northern Ireland. You will require a seperate licence.Difference between licences and permits
A rod licence is required by law for each rod used by anyone over 12 years in the area covered by DCAL and for all ages in the area covered by the Loughs Agency.
A permit or day ticket is a document issued by the fishery owner (person who holds the fishing rights) which allows the angler the right to fish in that fishery. The Department permits give permission to fish on the Public Angling Estate.Game angling licences
